Home Tour: $150,000 Modern Scandinavian interiors for a couple’s 4-room HDB along Bedok North Road
Who better to turn an old resale flat into a dream home for him and his family than the interior designer and homeowner himself?
By Lynn Tan -
When E+e Design and Build senior designer, Cedrick Law purchased this four-room resale flat, he knew that a major overhaul was on the cards. This was partly because the flat was in a poor condition, and also because the existing design and configuration did not quite suit his family’s needs. The 32-year-old’s approach when tackling his own home project was to identify and address the practical requirements, while creating an interior that would appeal to the tastes of both him and his wife.
Style wise, Cedrick has a preference for a clean look while his wife, Chua Tse Lyn, who is 33 years old and works as a people experience lead, loves wood. The combination of these led to a modern Scandinavian theme that brings together wood elements, whites and neutrals to create a simple, functional yet warm home.

Living Room Design
In the living room, the off-centre placement of an asymmetrical, curved sofa on a rectangular rug makes the rectilinear space feel more fluid and freer. The rounded forms, including that of the circular coffee table, contrast with the long, straight television console.
This language continues in the adjacent dry kitchen and dining area that is anchored by a peninsula island that is semi-circular at one end. “The long island is a great place for family and friends to get together,” says Cedrick.
Kitchen Island
It also makes for a great dining counter, pantry and drinks station. The dry kitchen used to be part of the main bedroom whose walls have been hacked. Apart from the addition of a dry kitchen, this move also creates a spacious and open concept, especially between the dry and wet kitchens, and makes the 990 sqft flat feel very roomy.
White and Wood Kitchen Design
The palette of woods and whites continues in the wet kitchen. Its length makes it possible to carve out a dedicated laundry area at the end near the windows, something that the couple wanted. This is separated from the wet kitchen by bi-parting sliding glass doors. Even when these doors are closed, the glass still allows the natural light from the windows into the wet kitchen.
One of the most major reconfigurations took place around the second bedroom, storeroom and the rear of the main bedroom along with the attached bathroom. These spaces have been combined to create a large master bedroom incorporating separate wardrobe and dressing areas. Just like in the living room, the master bedroom flooring has been overlaid with vinyl in a herringbone pattern.
For their three-year-old son’s bedroom, Cedrick kept everything modular to allow the flexibility to redecorate and reconfigure the room to meet his growing needs.
$150,000 Renovation Budget
The project took, which cost around $150,000 excluding furniture and furnishings, took about four months to complete and the family moved into their new home in November 2022.
Creating dream homes for clients has always been E+e Design and Build’s mission and now, Cedrick gets to design his own dream home. He attributes the success of the project to good communication. “My wife is now the client. Communication is the key to avoiding conflict. We tried to find a common ground and compromise wherever possible,” he says.
