House Tour: $60,000 minimalist industrial four-room HDB flat

This home may sport signature elements of industrial style, such as the metal mesh overhead shelves in the kitchen, but not so much the associated rough and raw look. As the homeowner wanted a simple industrial-style design, interior designer Kuay Mei Yee of Distinct Identity opted for bare white walls and sweeping, diagonally-laid vinyl flooring in hazelnut — a fresh change from brick walls and concrete finishes.

There are also other features in the interior inspired by the homeowner’s existing furniture. “The wrought iron and raw wooden surfaces of his Castlery bedside table, for instance, inspired me to design a space with black conduits running across ceilings, and cabinets with barn-style doors,” said Mei Yee.

These stylish elements are practical and durable too; the large, floor-to-ceiling cabinets give the homeowner plenty of storage, allowing the flat to remain clutter-free, and the vinyl flooring from Evorich is water- and scratch-proof.

Completing the industrial-style look are the warehouse-inspired lamps in the kitchen and dining area, wood-and-steel bar stools from Hipvan, cabinet doors finished with chalkboard panels – bought from Formica –  and the unique, customised wire mesh gate with unit number cut-outs.

The design of this spacious and clean-cut four-room flat shows that not all industrial-style homes must have a grungy vibe!
