House Tour: A minimalist, cat-friendly 4-room HDB flat in Fernvale
Every corner of this HDB apartment was designed with the homeowners' feline companions in mind.
The cats' comfort was a priority for Javis and Faye, a couple who moved into their four-room HDB apartment in Fernvale Road in October 2021. As feline lovers, they wanted to ensure their cats had enough room to roam and play, so incorporating cat-friendly furniture was a must.
Apart from that priority, they also wanted a mix of airy Scandinavian and modern minimalism for the design narrative. In their search for an interior designer who could take on the brief, they came across Don Wong of Lush Interior.

The wall-mounted climbing frames blend well into the earthy neutrals and clean lines that Don chose for the home. The couple chose a Samsung Frame TV, whose slim elegant profile matches that of the minimalist interior perfectly.
This bookshelf mimics the vertical lines of the climbing frames, providing the couple a space for displaying items and also a nook for their cats to rest in if they choose to.
When it came to the issue of maximising the limited space, an open-concept kitchen with an island counter was the answer. The couple loves having their breakfast here in the mornings while watching their cats gambol around.
To keep the look clean, there are minimal overhead shelves in the kitchen. Instead, all the storage is kept underneath.
A built-in wardrobe serves as a partition between the master bedroom and study, which are accessible via a sliding door. The study features a bay window with a window seat, where the cats love to bask in the sun while the homeowners check their emails.
Even the bathroom is shared with their feline friends – the homeowners requested a custom built-in nook for a litter tray within the vanity itself, tucked neatly out of sight.
