Home renovations can breathe new life into a space, allowing homeowners to update their decor and refresh their surroundings. For interior designer Ong Jia Qi, renovating his 1,300 square foot executive condo unit in Pasir Ris was an opportunity to reinvent his family's living environment as his lifestyle changed.

Jia Qi, who runs the design firm JQ Ong/The Association, lives in the three-bedroom condo with his wife and two daughters. The condo was first decorated in the early 2000s, but following the birth of his children, Jia Qi felt his style had matured and he wanted to inject more vibrant colors and metallic accents into the home.

Home renovation after 10 years

The living room is the heart of the condo renovation. Homeowner and interior designer Jia Qi wisely chose to give the space a neutral background of white walls plastered with cement screed. This creates a blank canvas to build upon with punches of color, texture, and sheen.

"The '33' painting is my note to myself to be financially stable by that age," Jia Qi explains. An Eames lounge chair in the corner was a present to himself, while a handmade rattan chair adds natural flair. Touches of gold in the coffee table legs, pendant light, and decorative objects tie the eclectic mix of midcentury, modern, and natural styles together.

Bedroom makeover

For the condo's master bedroom renovation, Jia Qi aimed for a balanced blend of masculine and feminine energy. He kept the walls stark white but hung an abstract floral artpiece called "Field of Lavender" over the bed for a soft accent. The bed's leather headboard and wooden stool add organic shapes and tactile elements.

"The wooden stool is one of a pair I spotted outside a flat and purchased for $50," Jia Qi notes. His unique finds and curated mix of new and old create a serene yet stylish oasis.
