Home Tour: A bright and airy home with indoor swimming pool & gym in Madrid, Spain

After an incredible garage makeover, it's hard to imagine that this Madrid home was once a dreary, cold garage space. Madrid-based Italian architect and designer Teresa Sapey embraced the task of transforming the former garage into a stylish living space in the heart of the city. The loft is now home to a couple and their daughter, endearingly called 'Loft Bordeaux' - a romantic nod to the French city where the homeowners first met.

Garage to home makeover

"In order to convert it into a livable home after the garage makeover, the most important task was to bring light into every inch of the house," says Italian architect and designer, Teresa. Her ingenious solution was introducing skylights, as "the garage is surrounded by apartment blocks, so the only way was to create zenith windows on the roof."

Generous garage space

But skylights alone weren't enough for the sizeable 500 square meter space. This led Teresa to propose a brilliant courtyard design, with the rooms distributed around it - considered the best solution for this garage makeover.

Home zoning

The garage-turned-Madrid home is divided into two zones. One contains the living and dining areas, kitchen, cellar and guest room. The other is the owners' private haven with the master suite, bathroom, indoor pool and gym - connected through a dressing room.

Delightful personal touches abound in this garage makeover success. Vinyl French lettering adding humor as the mistress doesn't like cooking, but wanted a large modern kitchen.

Bottle and art display

Round coated metal cavities of different sizes are used for bottle storage, blurring the boundaries between art and function.
