You may throw the best parties and soirees, but are you using the layout of your home as well as you should be? This terrace in Bedok is. Designed by interior experts W2DA, the house balances the needs of the homeowners with what will make a fun party venue with lots of talking points. The owners, a couple who cherish gathering friends and family under their roof, worked closely with their designers to create spaces that flow effortlessly from intimate conversations to lively gatherings, all while maintaining the warmth of a personal sanctuary when the last guest departs.

One such talking point is the living room’s exposed staircase. It is structural and functional, but also serves as a decorative element. The lush carpeted floors add a cosiness to the large space.

As evening light filters through strategically placed windows, the staircase casts fascinating shadows across the room, creating an ever-changing visual landscape that guests often find themselves admiring. The homeowners recall how this architectural feature has sparked countless conversations among visitors who appreciate the seamless blend of form and function in modern home design.

During a house party, guests gravitate towards the heart of the house - the kitchen. There are food, people making drinks, and the mood is light and casual. Adding pizzazz to this open-concept kitchen are designer chairs by Hans Wegner and Antonio Citterio, giving guests plenty of opportunities to lounge and interact with one another.

Every weekend, the kitchen island becomes the stage for impromptu cooking demonstrations as the host, an enthusiastic home chef, shares recipes and techniques with friends. The careful positioning of the island ensures that conversation flows as naturally as the wine, with sightlines deliberately maintained to keep everyone connected in the social kitchen space.

Guest room with private access

To ensure the guests feel right at home, the homeowners provided the guest room its own private access through a back window. (On top of the internal one through the house, of course.) It welcomes plenty of fresh air, and has luxe amenities like an ensuite bath and flatscreen TV.

This thoughtful addition to the guest accommodation reflects the couple’s attention to detail in creating a truly welcoming environment.

“We wanted our overnight guests to have their own retreat,” explains one homeowner, running her hand along the custom-built window seat that doubles as storage. “The ability to come and go independently makes everyone feel more comfortable, especially during our weekend-long gatherings.”

Providing the ultimate party to-do is the roof deck, complete with outdoor seating, a kitchen sink, a worktop, and a barbecue pit. Blaze it up, and pour out a drink. As twilight settles over Bedok, this elevated entertainment space comes alive with laughter and conversation. String lights twinkle overhead, casting a gentle glow on the carefully selected weather-resistant furniture.

The homeowners recall countless evenings spent here, from intimate birthday celebrations to neighborhood get-togethers that have forged lasting friendships. The rooftop garden, with its carefully selected potted plants, creates a verdant backdrop for these social moments while offering glimpses of Singapore’s eastern coastline on clear evenings.
