While some homeowners prefer a sleek, contemporary design, the occupants of this 2,400sqf terrace home — a couple and their three children — wanted a charming, nostalgic touch to their abode.

Their revamped home had to have adequate shelvings to display their mementoes, as well as designed to blend in with their existing furniture. Hence, design firm Zidane Design Associates created an open shelving at the staircase landing, and conceptualised a modern yet nostalgic theme — with a touch of resort-like elements — for the home.

The open shelving helped demarcate the living area from the dining room and kitchen, where most of the nostalgic accents are. This includes an old-school, marble-top dining table and wooden cafe chairs, as well as antique sideboards.

Though the kitchen sports a contemporary, handle-less design, the warm wood-look countertop as well as the homeowner's collection of tiffin carriers (or known to locals as tingkats) imbue an old-school atmosphere.

A rattan loveseat in the backyard further enhances this nostalgic mood.

Upstairs, the design firm added a bathroom to create an ensuite. It is designed to be concealed among full-height wardrobe doors. Also clad in wood-look laminate, the combination of a soft yellow paint and wood finishes creates a cosy ambience.

Just like the living room, the bathroom also sports a pebblewash flooring. This completes the resort-like atmosphere.
