House Tour: A multi-generational semi-detached house that embraces privacy and openness

This large multi-generational, 10-bedroom, semi-detached house spans over 8,000sqf. A collaboration between architecture firm Chalk Architects, and architectural and interior design company Studio Roundtop, the brief was to design a house for two households — grandparents and a married couple with a growing family.

The house had to provide both a sense of privacy and openness, especially in communal spaces such as this cosy living room.

The armchairs and sofa from Boconcept were chosen for their neutral colours, comfort and clean profiles.

The owner also requested for an outdoor garden that allows the elderly father a bright area to read and enjoy his morning breakfast.

Large sliding glass doors around the courtyard also connect three spaces seamlessly.

The elegant dining space was designed to accommodate occasional hosting, and showcases a dining table that has intricate marble veining.

As the owners prefer a warm material palette of wood tones, wood was chosen for the floors and cabinetry.

As for the bathroom, a luxurious mix of polished and unpolished stones in greys and whites were used.

Another bathroom in the home embraces a warm colour palette with the use of browns and greys.

As a strategy to maintain privacy and screen against the afternoon sun that hits the front facade of the house, wood lourves were added.

There are also many surprising spots where angled planes help to create a subtle interplay of light, texture and shadow.
