Don't expect to find any extraterrestrials here, but the roof of a house sitting on a hill in Siglap roof does resemble a spaceship. Designed by architects at A D Lab, the 6,830 sq ft property was built to accommodate a married couple and their three sons.
This story was first published on The Peak.
Space was paramount as they wanted to host guests, give each of their adolescent sons their own rooms, and also provide for the occasional visit from the grandparents.
In designing this project, it's evident that A D Lab cut no corner. The exterior features a curved concrete roof - setting the house apart from all the other roof-scapes clad in terracotta tiles, right from the get-go.
To maximise the space, the ground level is occupied by communal areas such as the living and dining room, while the upper floors house the more private living areas. In the basement, a games room, movie room and guest rooms are effectively stowed away - to be used on appropriate occasions.
Full-length glass sliding doors make for a near seamless boundary delineating the insides of the home from the swimming pool and garden outside. A curved overhang protrudes above the ground floor, making for an effective shade from the tropical sun.
A bulk of the house is contained within the ‘J’-shaped portion, while a detached portion makes for an open-air dining room (that can be closed if necessary), surrounded by a swimming pool.
Perks of staying on a hill include the views that it has to offer. Capitalising on the house as a vantage point, A D Lab designed the uppermost level to be a roof terrace that offers a breathtaking panorama overlooking the city centre.
Tundra grey marble is used on as flooring on the first storey, complemented by grey granite strips to form the curved walls in the living room that continue onto the roof of the car porch. Walnut timber veneer makes for an elegant contrast near the central stairwell, while splashes of colour bedeck the interior through carefully curated furniture and feature lighting.
