House Tour: Bukit Timah two-storey home built with teak, terrazo and concrete by Ong&Ong
By Young Lim -
When the owners of this home engaged award-winning architect firm ONG&ONG to design their house, they asked for something that would epitomise the notion of simplicity, down to the choice of materials.
The architect team’s proposal was a building surrounded by an edgeless pool, built with only three types of materials – terrazo tiles, teak wood and concrete.
In addition to the challenge, the team also offered some ideas to allow for natural cross-ventilation in the home. This included louvered screens across the upper floor of the home.
The louvered screens allow the family to direct the flow of air as well close it off when they prefer more privacy in the evenings.
Within the home, a wash of white is used in the common spaces. Handle-less cabinets lay flush along the wall, creating a stylish and sophisticated look.
The use of teak panelling helps to direct the flow of traffic from the ground floor to the next level. And up on the ceiling, the glorious golden colour of the material comes through brilliantly, creating a stunning effect.
In accordance with the family’s wishes, the spaces in the home have been kept pristine and neat.
While the bathrooms sport the same look of simplicity and character, details such as wood panelling and dark rocks add to charm of the space.
The merging of the floor to the water in the pool creates a luxurious resort-like ambiance, enhancing the sense of tranquility to the living area.
This cantilevered space above the porch becomes a feature of the home, with the light grey cladding bringing the space to life.
