Home Tour: $110,000 Modern minimalist renovation for a jumbo HDB in Marsiling

An abundance of breathing room doesn't necessitate filling it with plenty of stuff. In the case of this 1,920 sq ft jumbo HDB resale flat, interior designer Sam Peh of Aart Boxx Interior crafted a modern and minimalist space for the family residing here - a couple in their thirties, their mother and two children.

$110,000 Renovation cost

The couple's key considerations included easy maintenance and neat finishing. That aside, they left the creative direction and renovation of the apartment, which took about 10 weeks and cost $110,000, solely to Sam.

The entry way is played up with interlocking tiles that add visual interest and large glass windows that create a feel of openness.

But what draws the eye is the shoe cabinet, designed with strips of wood that allow for ventilation.

Modern minimalist interior design

White and greys dominate the apartment’s interiors, which comprises five rooms, including two master bedrooms (combined into one) and three common rooms. Blending harmoniously with wood-toned accents, it’s also laced with touches of black that anchor the otherwise airy space.

In the living room, vinyl concrete tiles don’t just lend style, but offer easy maintenance. And in place of a regular TV console, Sam went with a pull-out tray that houses media essentials and electronic gadgets for a clean-lined look.

Glass kitchen sliding doors

Separated from the living areas with glass sliding doors that can be opened for spatial flow, the capacious kitchen is mostly decked in white with hints of wood in light tones.

To cater to the couple’s love for cooking, Sam planned for a kitchen island with extra counter space and incorporated with a breakfast area. The multi-purpose island also creates a familial space for food preparation and dining.

Glass kitchen backsplash

The kitchen sink was designed to be both accessible from both the kitchen and the yard, with the latter artfully located behind the full-height cabinet and away from plain sight.

Tinted glass backsplash makes for fuss-free cleaning, and is ideal for the family who often enjoys cooking.

Simple master bedroom design

The master bedroom adheres to a simplistic and soothing aesthetic, with a neutral palette of light greys, white and wooden tones.

Artfully placed lighting, from two hanging lights by the bed to cove lighting overhead create a diffused glow in the room for a cosy vibe. Floating bedside tables free up floor space and contribute to a cleaner look.

Walk-In Wardrobe

With ample space, Sam demolished the walls between the master bedroom and a second bedroom, converting it into a walk-in wardrobe.
