House Tour: This 5-room HDB home in Pine Close has such a unique layout and colour combinations!

With its atypical layout, this five-room HDB flat at Pine Close is a visual delight. You'd expect no less of a home that belongs to two creative professionals who are fond of lively colours. "The design is heavily influenced by the owners' lifestyle and habits. We also discussed what they dislike about their previous homes, so that these were not repeated in the new place," says Eugene Lee of Shijin Design Consultancy.
Colours and curves played key roles in the design of the home. Eugene gathered images of the works by architect Luis Barragan and Wes Anderson so the homeowners can shortlist the hues they liked.
They created an open plan zoning treatment in the living and dining areas, which includes a bookcase separating the two bedrooms. The carpentry items do not go higher than waist or stomach levels, to avoid blocking natural light sources.
The homeowners love to bake, and an open kitchen will allow the smell of fresh bakes to fill the house. As the owners were getting a mint Smeg fridge, it was important that Eugene chose colours that will match it.
As the couple did not want a typical HDB layout, Eugene moved the tv area to the back of the home.
Though the living and dining rooms are filled with strong colours, the bedroom and bathrooms feature a softer, calmer palette. The renovation totalled to $100,000, and includes the removal of walls and floor finishes from the previous unit.
"When choosing and pairing loud colours for the home, go for tried-and-tested combinations that you have seen on real spaces. Avoid imagining colour combinations as much as possible, as the designer and homeowner may not be imagining the same thing. However, you should also expect that actual applied colours might have slight shade differences from renders," Eugene advises.
Curves are also introduced to soften the corners of the carpentry and ceiling cove profiles, to connect and unify the white space and high contrast elements, giving an overall harmonious look.
