House Tour: Turning a semi-d into a detached (almost) with a huge green wall by ADX Architects
By Young Lim -
Semi-Detached homes are common in Singapore, where developers tend to build rows of houses next to each other. However, when this homeowner wanted to rebuild the home on his semi-d property, he wondered if the new house could get a whole new look. This project was undertaken by local studio ADX Architects, who proposed a novel way to make the new home stand out by converting the side of the house that was connected to the neighbouring property into a huge green wall.
While the green wall buffers the home from the neighbouring plot, the design team also incorporated an extensive cantilever roof over the porch area to provide ample shade at the front of the home.
Stepping into the home, the colours are muted and elegant, accented by darker shades of browns and beiges from the wood and marble materials.
The straight lines and bold forms in the living room make the space look spacious and roomy, enhanced by the high ceiling.
The open concept living room leads seamlessly into the formal dining area, which is designed with a double-volume space. Interestingly, there is another casual dining area located further back. That is where the family can gather for convivial interactions in the evenings.
The modern look of the wooden table in the casual dining area encourages communal gatherings and is fuss-free to maintain.
In contrast, the table in the formal dining area is laid with a stunning marble top and metaalic legs with an artistic twist. Above the table lies a grouping of contemporary pendant lamps.
The master bathroom faces the green wall, which helps to open up the space without compromising on the privacy.
Because of the unique design, the master bathroom feels like a private sanctuary set amidst lush greenery.
Notice how the TV has been worked into the design of the shelving, which doubles as a partition between the sleeping area and the lounge area.
On the top floor, there is an entertainment room with a pool table overlooking the neighbourhood.
The green wall helps to zone off the sight of the neighbouring house, creating a private and exclusive feel.
The green wall is especially outstanding even from a distance. It has become the key feature of the home.
