The owners, a couple with two sons, entrusted Ai Tiong with a unique challenge: to maximize the floor area within the relatively compact 2,300 square feet of land. With ingenuity and finesse, the architect devised a terrace house design that defied spatial constraints.
The metal pitch roof extends out from the house to double as sunshading.
Metal pitched roof
To unlock the full potential of the corner terrace house, Ai Tiong embraced the attic space, seamlessly integrating a 45-degree pitched roof – the maximum allowable limit under local regulations. Dormer windows were strategically placed, creating a harmonious and visually striking exterior.
Extending far beyond its structural purpose, the metal pitch roof serves a dual role as a sunshading device, offering respite from the tropical sun while framing picturesque views of the surroundings from within the home.
A void in the centre of the house is where the staircase now sits, which works to effectively separate the spaces in front and at the back, namely the living and dining room on the first floor, respectively.

Step inside, and a neutral color palette envelops you in a serene ambiance, punctuated by statement furniture pieces like the iconic Eames lounger and ottoman in the living room. Natural light seamlessly permeates the interiors, reducing the reliance on artificial lighting during the day.
A central void houses the staircase, ingeniously separating the living and dining areas on the first floor. This open-concept design fosters a welcoming atmosphere, allowing natural ventilation and circulation to flow freely through full-height sliding doors.
Natural light fills the interiors, so there is little reliance on electrical lighting in the day.
Attic family room
Along the corridor leading to the attic family room, Ai Tiong thoughtfully incorporated bookshelves and storage spaces, creating a cozy haven for the family's mini library. This intimate nook invites relaxation and intellectual pursuits amidst the tranquility of the corner terrace house.
Open-concept dining area
The dining area sits alongside the dry kitchen, which has an island counter that offers additional seating when the family entertains guests. This space is also kept airy and breezy, thanks to full-height sliding doors that allow natural ventilation and circulation.
The open-concept design also gives the home a very welcoming ambience, complete with natural light streaming into the interiors.
Even in the master bathroom, Ai Tiong incorporated a six metre-high skylight to allow natural light into the space. Wall lights at intermediate heights accentuated the volume, while offering illumination at night.
