House Tour: Urban-bohemian, loft-inspired style in this conservation shophouse
By Home & Decor Team -
Most expat homes are decorated around resort themes. But for Singaporean Sarita Sies and her Slovak husband Michal Tyles, they wanted their Singapore home to be as far from that as possible since they spend most of their time in Bali, where they manage luxury resort villas. Masculine lines and a neutral palette create a city retreat in the couple's conservation shophouse in River Valley. They worked with designer Irene Toh of Spacious Planners, who created an urban-bohemian, loft-inspired style in the home.
Paintings from Indonesia add colour to the neutral palette of the dining area and guest bedroom. The dining area has a happy mix of seats: a solid wood bench, Eames moulded plywood and plastic side chairs, plus an Ikea classic, the Nordmyra.
Irene used blackboard panels as cabinet doors. The family has fun doodling as well as jotting down recipes, menus and to-do lists.
To enlarge the master bedroom, Irene hacked the bathroom wall, creating an open bathtub. She provided privacy in the shower and WC cubicles.
The couple chose sleek bathroom fittings from Bretz & Co and Hansgrohe that look like those used at the poolside.
