If you believe that a space speaks volumes about its inhabitants, then looking at this 1,100sqf five-room HDB flat in Punggol will persuade you to think that the homeowners are pretty laidback. And you’re not wrong. After the interior designers from Distinctidentity learned more about the simple lifestyle the young homeowner couple led, they went with a pared-down look using an abundance of light wood and a white backdrop.

The light colour scheme visually enlarges the living room, the heart of this home, and the orange sofa lends a splash of colour for contrast. Not big watchers of TV, the couple left it out of the space.

A working space is carved out in the living room and partitioned with framed glass doors, creating the illusion of an open space.

The concrete screed on the kitchen's ceiling beams creates a subtle border that "encloses" the cooking space.

After removing the wall that divided it from the living room, the kitchen now gets ample sunlight and ventilation. Renovation was $45,000, excluding fixtures and furniture.

The owners of this HDB flat gave to their interior designers from Spacedge Designs a brief to create an open-concept home with a loft-like feel, with an industrial-minimalist décor theme. For that effect, floors were covered in a glossy concrete-screed and furnishings were kept to a bare minimum.

The cold and spartan shell of the home is instantly made warmer with vibrant furniture in the living room.

One of the tricks in this home to reduce clutter was to centralise storage within this large glossy black box, where knotty and unkempt features such as cupboards, storage, and an entrance to a washroom are encased within it.

The "black box" opens up to reveal many surprises, including its colourful interiors.

To achieve the airy atmosphere of a loft, many of the internal walls of the home had to be removed for better ventilation.

The bedroom was further zoned into resting and study areas with the help of a standalone shelf in place of a wall, keeping the flow of space more organic.
