Interior designer New Nyew's three-room flat in Yishun looks nothing like the average HDB flat, and that's how she intended it to be. "I spend so much time working on contemporary or Scandinavian style decor for my clients, I didn’t want to see something similar at home. I wanted something over-the-top, with lots of drama," she says.

As her flat is a mere 678 sqf, she had all the walls hacked so it would feel more spacious. She also reconfigured the layout, moving the kitchen to the front, where one of two bedrooms and an adjoining storeroom were originally sited.

A kitchen island and long L-shaped counter provide space for food preparation and storage.

Wallpaper in a variety of prints, from stone to framed pictures, evoke an ambience that is both cosy and surreal. The green storage units have a “stepped” structure to make its shape more interesting.

The green “drawers” are not individual storage units; several “doors” actually front a larger cabinet.

Paired with Marilyn Monroe cushions, the tufted sofa in the TV area adds a touch of glamour, but is really an economical purchase from Taobao.

As the master bedroom is quite small, the homeowners moved the vanity area out to the entrance of the bedroom, but screened it off to provide privacy.

Though pink-and-green isn’t a common colour pairing in a home’s interiors, this refreshing palette graces a five room HDB apartment.

The dark turquoise wall across from the pink mosaic feature balances the bright shade. The open, asymmetrical metal shelves balance out the simple, symmetrical framework of a “house” on which the TV is mounted.

Because red is complementary to green on the colour wheel, and pink is a shade of red, the combination of pink and green works to create a strong colour contrast.

The corridor to the bedrooms is painted white as this is a transitional space that doesn’t need to be “busy”.

To make the sombre wall colour sing, the owner made sure the space has enough light streaming in.

It takes guts to use this lush, rich green anywhere in the home. Undertones of grey in the curtain and wardrobe doors help to dial down the brightness.
