akiHAUS, led by design director Lawrence Puah, brings a unique architectural perspective to interior design, blending stylistic vision with structural integrity. Accredited by the Singapore Interior Design Accreditation Council, this boutique design studio is known for creating spaces that are meticulously crafted to meet each client’s unique needs. akiHAUS believes that interior design should serve its users first and foremost, creating environments that respect the specific qualities of the site and reflect the aspirations of the homeowner. The firm’s approach—treating each project as a distinct and evolving art form—has led to a portfolio of diverse, personalised spaces, each sharing a commitment to spatial functionality and aesthetic refinement.

Lawrence Puah’s background in architecture and creative exploration in fields like graphic design and baking enriches akiHAUS’s design ethos, allowing the firm to seamlessly adapt to various styles without being confined to one aesthetic. This versatility, combined with a passion for evolving the craft, has earned akiHAUS multiple accolades, including the Design Firm of the Year award at the 2018 Lookbox Design Awards and the Gold Award at the Singapore Interior Design Awards in 2021. Consistently recognised for its outstanding work, akiHAUS has been named one of Home & Decor’s Top of the Class winners in 2022, 2023, and 2025, solidifying its reputation as a visionary leader in Singapore’s design landscape.

This project, aptly named “The Light House,” reveals the akiHAUS’ meticulous attention to architectural possibilities, blending structural integrity with stylistic elegance. Tasked with creating a modern, social space for a couple in their 30s who love to entertain, design director Lawrence Puah first focused on exposing the apartment’s original roof, enhancing the loftiness and character of the space. This ambitious design choice involved removing the ceiling to reveal the roof’s true structure, adding both a unique architectural feature and a sense of openness, akin to a high-rise glasshouse.

akiHAUS’s skill in spatial reconfiguration shines throughout the home, where they tailored each space to enhance flow and functionality. The former balcony, for instance, was reimagined as a solarium-like area that brings in natural light while maintaining privacy, creating a tranquil “garden in the sky.” Flexible spaces, such as an open-plan living area segmented by custom arches, cater perfectly to the homeowners’ social lifestyle, while clever design details—like foldable screens and concealed storage solutions—maintain the home’s minimalist aesthetic without sacrificing utility.

With the home’s prime waterfront location in mind, the design team focused on maximising the property’s natural beauty by incorporating “green-scapes” that frame sea views and infuse the space with a tropical atmosphere. Noteworthy details include the granite feature wall in the garden-inspired living room and fluted walnut timber in the foyer, which lend texture and elegance to the interiors. In the living area, custom lattice doors open to reveal backlit display shelves, creating a dynamic focal point that can be concealed when desired.

akiHAUS’s design ingenuity continues throughout the home, with thoughtful touches like a vertical garden extending from the open-air shower in the master bathroom up to the rooftop. This lush element unifies the interior and exterior, enhancing the home’s resort ambiance. In the basement den, a moss wall and custom tea-light brackets add a verdant touch, while the attic’s pavilion-style lounge opens to a rooftop terrace, perfect for social gatherings with sweeping views.

akiHAUS reimagined this duplex in Singapore’s Nature Mansion, blending modern industrial aesthetics with meaningful design references inspired by the homeowners’ memories of London and New York. The team began by reconfiguring the layout to maximise natural light and airflow, turning a previously enclosed kitchen and yard into an open, airy space. Sliding glass doors replaced walls in the study, enhancing openness and flexibility while the industrial-style twin columns were cleverly introduced to mirror the original structure, creating a visually balanced and symmetrical layout.

Throughout the home, akiHAUS crafted a visual narrative that celebrates the couple’s cosmopolitan past, incorporating British Racing Green accents, black metal details, and brick wall elements that evoke old-world charm with a modern twist. The kitchen, designed as a functional bar space, features a dark Dekton countertop and suspended open shelving, creating an ideal spot for entertaining. On the upper level, the master suite combines British-inspired green accents and classical moulding with a refined four-poster bed and luxurious textures, creating a private retreat that aligns with the home’s overall aesthetic.
