This walk-up apartment in Wessex estate evokes strongly of both eastern and western influences without looking bipolar.

The French furnishings in the home are a result of the lasting impression of Paris on the owner, who proceeded to decorate his home with Parisian vintage items and antiques. The result is a quaint and uniquely personalized space.

The high ceiling and regular rectangular layout appealed to the homeowner as it was easy to visualise how the space could be decorated. The “gas station” enamel lampshades complement the look of the dining table and chairs.

The original bare white space of the apartment served as a perfect canvas for the homeowner to express his decorative style. A framed art piece hangs above Parisian antique market finds like the wooden shoe moulds. Most of the items have a 18th century baroque style and an industrial vintage look.

The master bedroom succinctly reflects the home’s mix-and-match of eastern and western design elements, and old and new pieces in an easy-breezy style.

Friends who visit the second floor apartment gravitate to its long balcony, which enjoys the breeze and sound of rustling leaves coming from the canopies of surrounding trees.

The new owners of this 1,100 sqf walk-up apartment wanted an airy, Mediterranean-inspired update to the previously crammed space. With the help of interior designer Mark Yong of Piu, they also reconfigured the layout of the apartment and achieved their desired apartment look. Renovation set them back some $200,000.

Part of the renovation works included built-ins, like this plywood dining bench, which is paired with a weathered wooden picnic table. Tableware and vases are from Homes to Life.

The detail that is most evocative of the Mediterranean would be the Provencal blue of their kitchen cabinetry, a colour the owners adore that reminds them of the Mediterranean sea.

Viewed from the kitchen, these pivoting doors can be swivelled to open and close a small guest room that has been fitted with a built-in wardrobe.

Adding a touch of warmth is the red brick wall in the living area, which the owner "aged" using a wash of concrete. They also painted their second-hand rattan sofa white.

The louvre windows and doors such as this one that leads to the master bedroom are made from nyatoh wood. The wardrobe lines the wall on the right of the picture.
