The dragon playground holds a special place in the hearts of many Singaporean parents. More than just a play structure, these mosaic-tiled beasts are relics of a bygone era, symbols of community, and tangible links to our childhoods. Designed by HDB’s Mr Khor Ean Ghee in the late 1970s and early 80s, these unique playgrounds were crafted to be instantly recognisable landmarks for each estate.

While many have fallen victim to modernisation, a handful of these magnificent creatures still stand proudly across the island. Visiting them is a perfect opportunity to share stories of “the good old days” with your children, let them experience a slice of vintage Singapore, and, of course, snap some truly iconic family photos.

The Iconic Main Dragon: Toa Payoh Lorong 6

This is the dragon playground. Built in 1979, the Toa Payoh Dragon is the largest and most famous of its kind. Its vibrant mosaic scales, fearsome head, and long, winding body ending in a concrete slide captured the imagination of generations.

Though its original sandpit has been replaced with safer rubber flooring, the sense of nostalgia and adventure remains. It is a mandatory pilgrimage for any parent wanting to share a piece of their childhood.

The Baby Dragon: Toa Payoh Lorong 1

Often overlooked in favour of its larger sibling, this “baby” dragon playground also resides in Toa Payoh. While smaller and less elaborate, it shares the same distinctive mosaic tiling and offers a gentler climb and slide, making it perfect for toddlers and younger preschoolers who might find the main dragon a bit daunting. It is a sweet, quaint reminder of HDB’s playful design philosophy.

Nestled within the Ang Mo Kio heartland, this mini dragon playground is another well-preserved mosaic gem. It features a compact dragon head and a single concrete slide, ideal for younger children. Its smaller scale makes it feel very accessible and less intimidating than its Toa Payoh counterpart, while still retaining all the charm of the classic design.

  • Address: Block 571 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3, Singapore 560571.
  • Parking: HDB multi-storey car park at Block 570A or 571A.

The Iconic Pelican with Dragon Head: Pipit Road

While the body of the structure here is a Pelican, it features a classic mosaic dragon head. Located in MacPherson, this unique playground is a blend of two iconic HDB designs. The concrete pelican body offers slides, while the dragon head stands guard. It is an excellent example of the varied, creative designs HDB implemented during that era, making it a curious spot for children to explore.

  • Parking: HDB multi-storey car park at Block 54A.

The Golden Dragon: Pasir Ris Park (Adventure Playground)

The Golden Dragon: Pasir Ris Park (Adventure Playground)

This is a modern interpretation of the classic. Located within Pasir Ris Park (NParks), this “golden dragon” is a huge, contemporary play structure designed with climbing nets, multiple slides, and bridges, all inspired by the mythical creature. While not a mosaic dragon of the 70s, it pays homage to the beloved design and offers a much larger, more adventurous play experience for a wider age range.

  • Address: Pasir Ris Central, Singapore 519639 (within Pasir Ris Park, near Pasir Ris Sports Centre).
  • Parking: Ample parking at Car Park B or C within Pasir Ris Park.

Sembawang Park Playground

The Reimagined Dragon: Sembawang Park (Battleship Playground)

Another modern interpretation, this time with a maritime twist. While the main theme of Sembawang Park’s playground is a battleship, it features a colourful, contemporary dragon sculpture integrated into the play area. This dragon is less about climbing and more about visual appeal, offering a photo opportunity and a nod to the iconic heritage. It shows how the dragon motif continues to inspire new playground designs.

  • Address: Sembawang Road, Singapore 759902 (within Sembawang Park).
  • Parking: Car parks within Sembawang Park.
  • Public Transport: Buses from Sembawang MRT (can be a longer bus ride).
