Here’s the long and short of corridors: they’re boring. I mean, how much can you do to a narrow passageway right? In a standard HDB BTO flat, the corridor dimensions within the house—such as passageways connecting rooms, kitchens, and living areas—are designed to optimise space while ensuring comfortable movement. The dimensions can vary depending on the flat size and layout.

HDB Corridor Width

90cm to 1m is the standard minimum width for most internal HDB corridors. This allows a single person to walk comfortably without obstruction. According to HDB’s renovation guidelines, the internal corridor within an HDB flat should maintain a minimum width of 900mm (90cm) to ensure free and safe movement.

For larger BTO layouts, 1.1m to 1.2m width corridors offer better accessibility and ease of movement.

A stipulated minimum of 1.2m will be necessary for wheelchair accessibility. In some HDB BTO units designed for elderly or wheelchair users, corridors may be wider to comply with accessibility standards.

HDB Corridor Length

The internal corridor length varies depending on the HDB flat type (e.g., 2-room, 3-room, 4-room, or 5-room).

In 3-room and 4-room HDB flats, corridors typically run 2m to 4m leading to bedrooms and bathrooms.

In 5-room and executive HDB flats, corridors can extend 5m or more, especially in layouts with separate bedroom wings.

HDB Ceiling Height in Corridors

The standard ceiling height for HDB flats, including corridors, is 2.6m to 2.75m. This ensures adequate ventilation and lighting.

HDB Structural Walls

HDB has renovation regulations and guidelines for internal corridors within an HDB flat, ensuring safety, accessibility, and structural integrity. For example, hacking of structural walls (load-bearing walls) in corridors is strictly prohibited as it may compromise the building’s safety. Non-load-bearing partition walls within the corridor can be modified, but proper approvals must be obtained from HDB.

Rather than using the same materials for the surrounding walls of the corridor, this homeowner turned one wall into an accordion partition, and used wood on the other side.

HDB Corridor Floor Tiles

Any replacement of corridor flooring must comply with HDB’s guidelines on tile thickness and soundproofing to reduce noise impact on neighbours .The thickness of new tiles and adhesive must not exceed 50mm (5cm).

HDB Main Door & Gate

If renovating near the main entrance corridor, ensure that your main door and gate can fully open without obstructing common corridors. Fire-rated doors (if applicable) must not be altered unless replaced with HDB-approved fire-rated doors.
