LIGHT LAYERING

Design: Eightytwo

To produce dynamic interiors with depth, the concept of “light layering”, or incorporating a mix of different lighting types, is used. Here's what they are:

- Ambient lighting

For the room’s overall illumination, choose a warm tone that softens shadows and creates a relaxed mood. Usually in the form of downlights, cove lights and pendant lamps.

- Accent lighting

For highlighting certain details and decor, specific directional lights like track lighting or spotlights are used.

- Decorative lighting

This is what gives your room that visual flair — chandeliers, attractive fixtures and wall sconces. They are more ornamental and should not be too bright.

- Task lighting

An essential factor for carrying out activities that require clear vision, such as reading in bed and dressing up. Usually in the form of bedside table or floor lamps, as well as desk lamps.

LIGHTING TIPS

Design: Collective Designs

Enhancing your space:

Million Lighting shares that you can use upward lighting to help create the illusion of a higher ceiling, apart from accentuating ceiling designs.

Creating mood:

Also, for a comfortably lit atmosphere, choose fixtures that have warm LED light sources, and dimmable switch functions to control the level of illumination.

Preventing light glare:

When selecting a lamp, make sure that it doesn’t have an exposed bulb that produces a glare when you’re using it. For example, a bedside lamp should have a shade that extends low enough such that when you're lying in bed, the light isn't shining directly in your eyes. Choose one with a softly diffused shade that is lower than your line of sight.

And don't make these common lighting design mistakes!
