The Juicy Salif’s striking aluminium body looks like a terrifyingly oversized spider or a sci-fi monster, anything but what it actually is – a citrus squeezer. Designed by Philippe Starck for Italian homeware label Alessi in 1998, the Juicy Salif is available in grey/black Anthracite.
Here's what you should know about this designer product:
1) Phillipe Starck was squeezing lemon juice over calamari in an Italian pizzeria, which inspired him to sketch his idea of a lemon squeezer on the table mat. He then sent the sketch to Alberto Alessi.
2) This futuristic-looking object actually provoked the design world! It did not follow the “form follows function” principle - on purpose!
3) There is a limited edition, gold-plated Juicy Salife (a version launched to celebrate its 10th anniversary). Find it? Keep it. It's worth a lot!
Can't figure out how it works? Here's how:
Place the fruit on the rounded tip, pressing gently and making slow rotating movements at the same time. The juice will trickle down to the tip, and into your glass or bowl below. Cast from aluminium, has three spindly legs with rubber paddings below for stability.
