The Dyson brand has been synonymous with innovative and high-quality vacuum cleaners for years, and their latest addition, the Dyson Wash G1 Wet Floor Cleaner, is no exception. As the Editor-in-Chief of Home & Decor (and Head Reviewer) I've had the privilege of testing out the revolutionary Dyson Wash G1 Wet Floor Cleaner, and let me tell you, it's a game-changer for hard floor cleaning that's going to make you want to throw your wooden mop away. With its smart looks, user-friendly interface and efficient cleaning experience, the Dyson Wash G1 may just be the best smart mop in Singapore.
Introduction to Dyson's Product Line
If you're familiar with Dyson, you'll know that they're known for their cutting-edge technology and sleek designs. Their product line features a range of vacuum cleaners, each designed for users with specific needs. In June 2023, Dyson also rolled out its first wet and dry vacuum solution - the Dyson Submarine V12s Detect Slim. Fast forward 12 months later and the brand rolled out its wet floor cleaner - the Dyson Wash G1. Now while the wet and dry feature of the Submarine V12s Detect Slim was more of an add-on option in the form of a removable cleaner head attachment, the Wash G1 wet floor cleaner is unmistakably developed as a wet cleaner, from the cleaner head design to the water container. It definitely trumps the conventional mop since it does the job of both cleaning and mopping your floor at the same time.
As someone who's struggled with cleaning hard floors, I was intrigued by the idea of a machine that could tackle both wet and dry dirt, as well as tough stains, with ease. When the Dyson Submarine V12s Detect Slim was unveiled last year, I tried it out and found room for improvement. So needless to say, when the Dyson Wash G1 dropped a month ago, I was eager to see if the engineers at Dyson managed to solve those teething issues, such as the limited capacity of the water tank and the difficulty in cleaning out debris from the cleaner head.
Key Features of Dysons Wet Floor Cleaners
Homeowners like me, who prefer to take cleaning into our own hands instead of entrusting it to a domestic help, know that a good vacuum cleaner is all about the features. And let me tell you, the Dyson Wash G1 has some impressive ones. Here are just a few of the key features that caught my attention:
- Powerful, hygienic floor washing: The Dyson Wash G1 uses highly absorbent microfibre rollers to pick up liquid spills, dry dirt, debris, and hair, leaving your floors clean and hygienic.
- Rapidly removes wet and dry dirt, and tough stains: With its advanced technology, the Dyson Wash G1 can tackle even the toughest messes, covering up to 290sqm in a single tank. That’s roughly twice the size of a 5-room HDB!
- Effortlessly glides and easy to manoeuvre: The machine's double rollers spin in opposite directions, making it easy to glide across floors, even under furniture.
- Automatically separates debris and liquid waste: The Dyson Wash G1's unique system separates debris from dirty liquid, making for hygienic, no-touch disposal.
- Self-clean cycle: In just 140 seconds, the Self-clean cycle flushes the whole system, ready for next time, while it charges on the dock. This makes the Wash G1 an easy wash and effortless maintenance tool for homeowners.
Now I’m an animal lover, and I have two dogs, who happen to be messy eaters. Meal time for them always means cleanup time for me because there will be bits of cooked vegetables and minced meat strewn over the floor. If like me, you are struggling with messy floors and wanting a reliable solution too, then the Dyson Wash G1 might just be the floor mop update you never knew you needed… until now.
It's worth noting that the Dyson Wash G1 is specifically designed for hard floors, making it an ideal choice for homeowners with tile, vinyl, laminate, or sealed wooden floors. And with its advanced technology and user-friendly design, it's perfect for tackling daily messes, from spills and stains to dry dirt and debris.
What's new about the Dyson Wash G1
There's a lot to get excited about when it comes to the Dyson Wash G1, and as someone who's had the pleasure of using it in my own home, I can confidently say that it has made floor cleaning much more bearable, since I don't have to lug around a huge pail while mopping.
Innovative design and technology
For starters, the Dyson Wash G1 boasts an innovative design that sets it apart from other hard floor cleaners on the market. Its powerful, hygienic floor washing capabilities make quick work of wet and dry dirt, and even tough stains. And with its ability to cover up to 290sqm in a single tank, you can clean your entire home without needing to refill. The Wash G1's advanced technology also allows it to automatically separate debris and liquid waste for hygienic waste disposal, making cleaning up a breeze. One of the things that really impressed me about the Wash G1 is its ease of use. The machine glides effortlessly across the floor, making it easy to manoeuvre, even under furniture. And with its precision-controlled hydration system, you can adjust the water level to suit the task at hand, whether you're dealing with light spills or stubborn stains. But what really sets the Wash G1 apart is its ability to pick up both wet and dry debris, including hair and large chunks of food, which would normally need to be picked up manually before mopping. This makes it an ideal solution for busy homeowners like myself, who don't have the time or energy to deal with tedious cleaning tasks.
Unique features and upgrades
Even more impressive are the Wash G1's unique features and upgrades, which take its cleaning capabilities to the next level. For example, the machine comes with three cleaning modes, allowing you to adjust the water level to suit the task at hand. And with its MAX setting, you can tackle even the toughest stains and messes with ease. I was also impressed by the Wash G1's self-clean cycle, which flushes the entire system in just 140 seconds, ready for next time. This is a marked improvement from the Submarine V12s, as the wet and dry cleaning head requires the user to clean out the water trays manually after every use, which can be a hassle. And with its click-in battery, you can get up to 35 minutes of floor washing power, making it easy to clean your entire home in one go.
How Dyson Wash G1 differs from other wet dry vacuums
Now, let's talk about what sets the Dyson Wash G1 Wet Floor Cleaner apart from other wet dry vacuums on the market.
Comparison of key features and specifications
With respect to choosing a wet floor cleaner, there are several factors to consider. Here are some key features and specifications that set the Dyson Wash G1 apart from the competition:
- Counter-rotating motorised rollers: Unlike traditional vacuum suction, the Dyson Wash G1 uses counter-rotating motorised rollers to separate large debris from liquids, making it more effective at picking up both wet and dry dirt.
- Pulse-modulated hydration points: The Dyson Wash G1 features 26 pulse-modulated hydration points that ensure water is evenly applied across the rollers, allowing you to clean with clean water from start to finish.
- Separated hygienic waste disposal: The Dyson Wash G1's unique system automatically separates debris from dirty liquid, making it easy and hygienic to dispose of waste.
- Self-clean cycle: The Dyson Wash G1 features a self-clean cycle that flushes the whole system in just 140 seconds, making maintenance a breeze.
- Up to 290sqm floor coverage: The Dyson Wash G1 can cover up to 290sqm on a single tank of water, making it ideal for larger homes or apartments.
| Feature | Dyson Wash G1 | Other Wet Dry Vacuums |
|---|---|---|
| Counter-rotating motorised rollers | Yes | No |
| Pulse-modulated hydration points | 26 | Varies |
| Separated hygienic waste disposal | Yes | No |
| Self-clean cycle | Yes | No |
| Floor coverage | Up to 290sqm | Varies |
While other wet dry vacuums may offer some similar features, the Dyson Wash G1's unique combination of counter-rotating motorised rollers, pulse-modulated hydration points, separated hygienic waste disposal, self-clean cycle, and up to 290sqm floor coverage make it a standout in its class.
Cleaning Capacity & Battery Life
With its powerful motor and highly absorbent microfibre rollers, the Dyson Wash G1 is designed to tackle all types of messes on your floors. According to Dyson, the machine's 1-liter water tank capacity allows you to clean up to 290sqm in a single tank. In my experience though, I’ve found this to be somewhat subjective as it really depends on how thorough you tend to be with your cleaning. Being used to the conventional mops, I go over the same area twice to three times before moving on, and when I do I found that I needed to refill the water tank after cleaning out the living room of my 4-room HDB. That said, it can handle the kitchen and bedrooms with plenty of water to spare.
The suction power of the Dyson Wash G1 is also noteworthy. The machine's counter-rotating motorised rollers work together to pick up both wet and dry dirt, debris, and hair, leaving your floors clean and streak-free. I was impressed by the machine's ability to pick up even the smallest particles, including dust and dirt, leaving my floors pristine and clean. It even managed to clear up the dirt and dog hair from the grout lines. One of the standout features of the Dyson Wash G1 is its ability to automatically separate debris and liquid waste for hygienic waste disposal. This means you don't have to worry about getting your hands dirty or dealing with messy cleanups. The machine's unique system separates the debris from the dirty liquid, making it easy to dispose of waste without coming into contact with it.
Battery Life and Charging Time
On a single charge, the Dyson Wash G1 provides up to 35 minutes of floor washing power. This is sufficient time to clean a large area, such as a living room or kitchen, once over, although if you’re a perfectionist like me, you’ll want to go through your home a second time. I found the battery life to be just enough for one round of cleaning, and for another round all I had to do was to wait for the battery to recharge (you can also consider buying an additional click-in battery from Dyson). Thankfully, the machine's charging time is relatively quick, taking about an hour to fully charge, which offers just enough time for me to catch up on an episode of my favourite series on Netflix. One other thing I noticed about Dyson’s batteries is that they tend to be more durable than the OEM versions. Dyson’s batteries also put out more consistent power, ensuring you’re getting the best clean out of your vacuum.
One of the convenient features of the Dyson Wash G1 is that it comes with a sleek docking plate (docking stations are usually sold separately for other Dyson dry vacuums). While it may be more of an aesthetic item, the docking plate provides a pretty space for me to place the Wash G1 when I don’t need to use it.
Unboxing and First Impressions
Out of the box, I was surprised that the Wash G1 wet floor cleaner came with much less items compared to a dry vacuum. It had one cleaning head, along with the main stem and bottles as well as a handle, power cable and docking plate. Much of the weight came from the cleaning head, which is heavy enough to keep the vacuum upright when not in use.
In line with Dyson’s user-friendly design, everything came together with a reassuring ‘click’. The only downside was plugging the power cable to the docking plate, because that one didn’t click (image below). So I spent some time trying to force the plughead in, before realising that it wasn’t necessary. But this could be a stumbling block for those who are expecting that ‘click’.
All in all, it took less tha half an hour from unboxing to getting the Wash G1 to start cleaning my living room floor, which is impressive. For time-strapped homeowners, who abhor the thought of having to pore through an instruction manual, Dyson has short video clips on helping you to get used to the Wash G1, available through the MyDyson app when you register your machine.
The small LCD panel, while smart in design, serves only to tell you how much power is left, the level of hydration you’re using and when you need to clean the vacuum. It’s a nice touch, but I feel it has the potential to do much more, such as showing you how much area you’ve covered or whether you are going too fast or slow. (P.S: When the machine malfunctions, the panel will also pinpoint where the issue is and how to solve it. On top of that, it will also inform you when it's time to change out the brush heads.)
Initial Setup and Configuration
Any homeowner who's struggled with messy floors will appreciate the ease of setting up the Dyson Wash G1 Wet Floor Cleaner. I simply filled the clean water tank with water, added a small amount of gentle detergent (optional, but recommended), and turned on the machine.
One other boo-boo I made was that I filled the wrong tank with water on my first attempt. Now each bottle comes with a different-coloured tab, red and blue. Keep in mind that you are supposed to fill the top tank (blue tab) with clean water, while the dirty water is deposited in the lower tank (red tab) unit.
Increasing the amount of water to your floor can be done easily by tapping the silver button on the screen. There are three levels of hydration to choose from, including a MAX button you can press for those aged ketchup stains in the kitchen. I was pleased to see that the machine glided effortlessly across my floors, picking up dirt, debris, and hair with ease. It could even handle the uneven surfaces on my kitchen tiles easily, picking up anything from seeds (yes, I have several parrots roaming my home) to drops of soya sauce. One of the standout features of the Dyson Wash G1 is its ability to automatically separate debris and liquid waste, making it easy to dispose of without coming into contact with any mess.
This feature alone has been a game-changer for me, especially when cleaning up after messy meals. The debris tray, which can be removed from the roller heads can be easily taken out and washed. I really appreciated it because dismantling the Submarine V12s wet cleaning head took some skill, especially when you are trying to realign the water tray (otherwise they won’t slide back in). With the Wash G1, washing the cleaning head is a breeze.
Looks, Ease of use & Weight in hand
Design-wise, Dyson definitely wins hands down. After all, this is the brand that turned a chore like vacuuming into something sexy and trendy. The Wash G1 Wet Floor Cleaner is diminuitve in size, taking up slightly less space than other dry vacuums. The matte navy colour is appealing and matches the grey accents perfectly. This is a machine that you don’t need to hide away in the storage when not in use. In fact, most homeowners I know proudly display they Dyson collection prominently.
Weighing in at 4.9kg (slightly over 5kg when the water tank is filled), this machine is easy to maneuver and store, making it perfect for small homes. The ergonomic design of the handle ensures a comfortable grip, reducing fatigue during extended cleaning sessions. I was impressed by how effortlessly I could glide the machine under furniture, thanks to its low profile and clever design. The machine's overall build quality is exceptional, with a sturdy construction that exudes durability. While other wet dry vacuums come in plastic bodies, the Wash G1’s metallic frame ensures your investment will last quite a while and stand up to the daily rigours of home cleaning. I was pleased to find that the machine's weight is evenly distributed, making it easy to push and pull around without straining my back or arms. In terms of ergonomics, the Dyson Wash G1 Wet Floor Cleaner scores high marks. The machine's design takes into account the natural motion of the human body, making it easy to use for extended periods without feeling fatigued. The handle's comfortable grip and adjustable height ensure that users of all ages and abilities can use the machine with ease.
User experience and comfort
User experience is where the Dyson Wash G1 truly shines. From the moment I turned it on, I was impressed by its quiet operation and smooth gliding motion. Being at work during the day, the only time I have for cleaning the home is at night. The Wash G1 operates with minimal noise. It gives out a soothing ‘swoosh’, which doesn’t drown out the television or even if you’re having a conversation on the phone. The machine's powerful motor and advanced water management system work in harmony to provide a seamless cleaning experience. I was able to effortlessly clean large areas of my floor, including tight spaces and corners, without breaking a sweat. The Dyson Wash G1's advanced water management system ensures that the machine always uses the right amount of water for the task at hand. This means you can clean with confidence, knowing that you're not wasting water or leaving your floors too wet. I appreciated the machine's ability to automatically separate debris and liquid waste, making disposal a breeze. Overall, the Dyson Wash G1 is a joy to use, offering a comfortable and convenient cleaning experience that's hard to beat. Its lightweight construction, ergonomic design, and advanced technology make it an ideal choice for anyone looking to simplify their cleaning routine.
Effectiveness with Wet & Dry Objects
Some of the most impressive aspects of the Dyson Wash G1 are its ability to tackle various surfaces and debris with ease. From fine dust and small debris to hair and stubborn stains, this machine can handle it all. I was particularly impressed by its performance on my tile floors, where it effortlessly picked up dirt and grime, leaving them looking like new. The counter-rotating motorised rollers, covered in highly absorbent microfiber, work wonders at removing wet and dry dirt, and tough stains, making it perfect for high-traffic areas like hallways, kitchens, and bathrooms.
One of the standout features of the Dyson Wash G1 Wet Floor Cleaner is its ability to separate debris and liquid waste for hygienic waste disposal. This means that you can clean with confidence, knowing that you're not spreading dirt and germs around your home. I found this feature to be particularly useful when cleaning up after my pets’ messy mealtime antics, where food and drink spills are a regular occurrence.
The Dyson Wash G1 Wet Floor Cleaner is also incredibly effective at cleaning tight spaces and awkward areas, thanks to its slim design and ability to glide effortlessly under furniture. This made it easy to clean hard-to-reach areas, such as under my couch and dining table, without having to move heavy furniture around.
Compare between a Dry Vacuum and Wash G1 Wet Floor Cleaner
Your floors are a crucial part of your home, and keeping them clean can be a daunting task. As far as cleaning your floors, you have two main options: a dry vacuum or a wet floor cleaner like the Wash G1. But which one is right for you?
| Dry Vacuum | Wash G1 Wet Floor Cleaner |
|---|---|
| Suitable for dry debris and dust. Used on carpets and hard floors | Suitable for wet and dry debris, dust and liquid spills and stains. For use on hard floors |
| Uses suction to pick up dirt and debris | Uses absorbent microfibre rollers to pick up dirt and debris |
| Cannot be used on liquids or wet messes | Designed to tackle tough stains and wet messes |
| May require additional cleaning steps, such as mopping | Cleans and washes floors in one step |
Key differences and similarities
Between a dry vacuum and the Wash G1, there are some key differences that set them apart. One of the main differences is the type of debris they are designed to pick up. Dry vacuums are best suited for dry debris and dust, while the Wash G1 is designed to tackle both wet and dry debris, including liquid spills and stains.
Another key difference is the way they pick up dirt and debris. Dry vacuums use suction to pick up dirt and debris, while the Wash G1 uses absorbent microfibre rollers. This makes the Wash G1 more effective on wet or sticky messes, while dry vacuums may struggle with these types of messes.
Despite their differences, both dry vacuums and the Wash G1 share some similarities. Both are designed to make cleaning easier and more efficient, and both are suitable for hard floors. However, the Wash G1 takes it a step further by cleaning and washing floors in one step, whereas dry vacuums may require additional cleaning steps, such as mopping.
Which one is right for you?
Differences in your cleaning needs will ultimately determine which type of cleaner is right for you. If you have mostly dry debris and dust on your floors, a dry vacuum may be the better choice. However, if you have a lot of wet or sticky messes, such as pet accidents or spills, the Wash G1 is likely a better fit.
If you have a busy household with kids or pets, the Wash G1 may be a better option as well. Its ability to tackle tough stains and wet messes makes it a great choice for households that need a reliable and efficient cleaning solution for the floors around the home.
On the other hand, if you live in a small apartment or have mostly low-traffic areas, a dry vacuum may be sufficient. It's also a good option if you're looking for a lightweight and easy-to-maneuver cleaner. In fact, you should be considering the Submarine V12s Detect Slim instead, as that option offers the best of both worlds with its wet dry cleaning head attachment.
Right now, you may be thinking, "But what about the maintenance and upkeep of these cleaners?" Don't worry, I've got you covered. The Wash G1 has a self-clean cycle that makes maintenance a breeze, and dry vacuums are generally easy to empty and clean as well.
Pricing
The Dyson Wash G1 Wet Floor Cleaner currently retails for $999. It’s slightly cheaper than most of its dry vacuum counterparts but still more than other wet dry vacuums on the market, such as the Tineco Wet Dry vacuum ($615) and the Dibea HC26/28 Cordless Smart Wet Dry Floor Washer ($316). Yet when you take into account the durability and quality, along with Dyson’s suave design and readily available customer support, this price is reasonable and worth paying for.
Even though the Dyson Wash G1 Wet Floor Cleaner is a premium product, it offers unparalleled value for money. With its advanced technology, ease of use, and impressive cleaning capabilities, it's an investment that will pay for itself in the long run. Compared to other hard floor cleaners on the market, the Dyson Wash G1 stands out for its unique features, such as its pulse-modulated hydration system and separated hygienic waste disposal. In terms of competitive analysis, the Dyson Wash G1 is a clear winner when it comes to performance, design, and innovation. While other brands might offer similar products at a lower price point, they often lack the quality and attention to detail that Dyson is known for. With the Dyson Wash G1, you're getting a top-of-the-line product that's backed by a reputable brand with a history of innovation and excellence. It's worth noting that the Dyson Wash G1 is not just a cleaning tool, but a time-saving solution that can help you maintain a clean and healthy home with minimal effort. When you consider the time and energy you'll save by using the Dyson Wash G1, the investment becomes even more worthwhile.
Advantages and disadvantages of the Wash G1 Wet Floor Cleaner
Vacuums and wet dry vacuums have their own set of advantages and disadvantages. Here are some of the key benefits and drawbacks of the Dyson Wash G1: As a homeowner, I appreciate the convenience and ease of use of the Dyson Wash G1. It's perfect for quick cleanups and daily maintenance, and its ability to pick up both wet and dry dirt makes it a versatile tool for any home.
In addition, it is important to understand that the Wash G1 is designed as a wet floor cleaner, and it only operates with liquid in the tank. Unlike the Dyson Submarine V12s Detect Slim, it cannot double as a regular vacuum cleaner and it cannot be used on carpets, fabrics, upholstery or bedlinen. But what it can do, which is to pick up wet and dry debris from the floor and clean it at the same time, it does very well. Consider it a specialist cleaner, while the others are just general cleaners.
The weight could also be an issue for some. When fully loaded with water, the Dyson Wash G1 weighs in at over 5kg. Even though the weight is ergonomically distributed, using the Wash G1 for more than 15 minutes can be a strain on the wrist.
To wrap up
Summing up, I'm thoroughly impressed with the Dyson Wash G1. As a homeowner, I know how frustrating it can be to deal with messy floors, especially when you have pets or children running around. This wet floor cleaner has made home living easier for me, making quick work of even the toughest messes. It is perfectly sized for apartment settings, allowing you to clean up your home with minimal fuss.
I've found the Wash G1 to be incredibly easy to use because of its intuitive design and effortless gliding motion. The precision-controlled hydration system is also a standout feature, allowing me to customise the cleaning experience to suit my specific needs. And let's not forget about the hygienic waste disposal system, which makes cleaning up a whole lot less gross. Overall, I highly recommend the Dyson Wash G1 Wet Floor Cleaner to anyone looking for a powerful, efficient, and easy-to-use wet floor cleaner. It's been a lifesaver for me, and I'm confident it will be for you too. Whether you're dealing with spills, stains, or just general messiness, this machine is up to the task.
