News dropped yesterday that the British-founded, Singapore-based tech company, Dyson, has released a brand new product - the Dyson Zone headphones and air purifier. This marks the 31-year-old company's first venture into the category of wearable tech.

The Dyson Zone headphones took the company six years of audio research and development.

It's a headphone

Like all headphones, you'll get active noise cancellation (ANC) reducing ambient city sounds of up to 38dB (Serangoon's noise level is 73.1dB). The low distortion audio and full spectrum audio reproduces sound frequencies from 6Hz to 21kHz.

Headphone comes with microphones

Yup, you can use it for your work meetings. The Dyson Zone is built with 11 microphone points. The mic function also comes with noise suppression, so your voice can be heard clearly over the air.

Battery life is 50 hours (or 4 hours with purifier)

The Dyson Zone headphone's battery lifespan is 50 hours. That's pretty decent compared to the Apple headphones, Bose headphones, JBL headphones, and Bang & Olufsen headphones.

  • Dyson Zone: 50 hours
  • AirPods Max: 20 hours
  • Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700: 20 hours
  • JBL Club 950NC: 55 hours
  • Bang & Olufsen H95: 50 hours (or 38 hours if ANC is on)

JBL's Club 950NC, however, still tops the battery life chart with 55 hours of audio time.

However, if you're using both audio and air purifier, your battery life reduces dramatically to just four hours.

Zero to 100 per cent charging takes three hours at full uptake - but that's assuming you use the original cable and a wall socket with sufficient voltage and amperage.

Charging is via USB-C ports. Batteries are lithium-ion.

Audio was engineered by "science" and "research"

According to Dyson, the global audio industry at large relies on human ears to develop their audio products.

Dyson decided that humanly error and opinion wasn't for them, and instead opted for science and research - although the brand does not go on to explain what the scientific methodology or data sets used were.

"Many audio developers rely on a golden listener; this has become common practice across the audio industry, where a trained individual determines what ‘good’ sounds like. Dyson engineers opted to take a more scientific approach, led by audio research and validating the resulting specification targets with extensive user trialing," the brand announced to the media.

It's also an air purifier for the face

The "face mask" is an air purifier meant to reduce 99 per cent of particles from air pollution.

Air purifier contains a carbon filter

Called K-Carbon, the air purifier's key filtration system is a carbon filter that's been enriched with potassium. This helps to reduce acidic gas found in city air pollution.

It'll launch in Singapore in March 23

China will be the first to receive the Dyson Zone in January 2023. That's followed by everyone else - US, UK, Hong Kong, and Singapore in March.
