With a background in fine art, Laura Kirar takes an artistic approach to her work. The designer, whose expertise lies in the luxury market, has an extensive portfolio that includes soft furnishings, furniture, lighting and bath ware. For more than a decade, she has been working with the Kohler Interiors Group to design furniture for American brands such as McGuire and Baker.

How does having a background in fine art influence your work?

Fine art influences me to think about the concept behind creating something, and not just the way it looks. So I’m concerned about whether something is beautiful and comfortable, and also really interested in the bigger idea behind an entire collection.

Which home design and furnishing trends are popular right now?

Individualism and making a very personal statement. Specific to the luxury market, there are people who have access to almost everything, but they want the things they acquire and possess to be special and unique to themselves. In a way, that tells the world: “This is who I am and what makes me special.”

What is the inspiration behind your newest range for Baker?

I was inspired by my travels to various countries, such as Mexico, Chile, Spain and Italy. There is truly a mix of influences in each and every piece – such as the ancient cultures of Mexico and primitive art, as well as Javanese craft, Chinese traditional pieces and, of course, European design.

What are some of the materials and designs you’ve incorporated into the collection?

The important materials are cast brass, to create sculptural and jewellery-like elements on the pieces, and a mix of wood – walnut and oak – with a more dry or matte finish, as opposed to the previous collection’s shiny one. One of the pieces – the Jade accent table – even has a special “platinum” finish, which is like a silver leaf finish, to bring luxury and shine to the range.

Do you have a favourite piece – one you can see in your own home?

I especially love the Jade accent table for the beautiful carving of its concentric frame and the little hand-painted faceted “gem”.
