H&D Hotlist #119: New design products, furniture and accessories
From ceramic tiles inspired by the surface of the moon to a new materials made of waste crops that can turn UV light into renewable energy, these are some of the most exciting new designs!
Between Wood and Stone
Moon Vein, a tile collection from Italian brand Ceramiche Coem, is fashioned after the brown quartzite stone. A natural stone mined in Brazil, brown quartzite has a unique, directional veining that feels almost like wood grain to the touch. Similarly, Moon Vein recreates this feel with directional texture on its surface, creating a sophisticated finish that looks as good as it feels.
Ceramiche Coem Moon Vein is available in four colours: White & Grey, Grey, White and Beige from Hafary.
Double Winners
James Dyson Awards (JDA) has named two inventions as its 2020 international winners. Invented by 23-year-old Judit Giro Benet from Tarragona, Spain, The Blue Box is a device that can detect breast cancer at-home by using a urine sample.
Meanwhile, the AuREUS System technology, invented by 27-year-old Carvey Ehren Maigue from Mapua University in Manila, is a new material made from waste crops that converts UV light into renewable energy. It is the first-ever Sustainability Award winner of the James Dyson Award 2020. Each inventor receives a £30,000 prize.

You’ll never be too old to have your favourite anime characters on your work desk. Homegrown standing desk company Omnidesk has launched the Pokemon Collection, a family of height-adjustable desks with official Pokemon design – a world’s first.
Choose from three designs: The Evolution, The Classic and The Icon, all of which come in three lengths: 48, 60, and 72 inches and feature touch-button electric motor mechanism, smart presets and child lock function for those who share their workspace with the little ones.

Tactile Tech
How do you touch the elevator button now? Still with your finger, with your elbow? We’re increasingly discerning about the things that we touch directly.
Stuck, a local creative agency, has invented Kinetic Touchless, a system of touchless lift buttons that recreates the tactile response. As the finger moves towards the button, it responds by sinking inwards before pushing back out while remaining safely contactless.
