Looking for a stunning designer armchair for your living room? The Womb chair by Knoll is well-crafted, comfortable, and has an interesting story behind it! Did you know that it was named Womb, based on the belief that most people have never felt as comfortable and secure as when they were in their mother’s womb?
Finnish-American designer Eero Saarinen’s interpretation of “a chair which feels like a basket full of pillows”, which was a personal design request from Florence Knoll herself.
Introduced in 1946, the chair has a curvaceous silhouette and a snug seat which wraps the user in a warm embrace. It broke away from the many “rigid” armchair designs of that time, and was designed to replace the over-stuffed armchairs which dominated the market then.
However, it was important to Eero that his design was just as large and comfortable, so the armrests were designed to be wide and flat. This way, you can sit in various positions comfortably – you can even sling your legs over the armrests.
Eero wanted to design a chair that felt good to sit in – not just because of the depth of its cushioning, but also the shape of its shell - and he definitely achieved that!
