Beyond the Tour: How to achieve the ultimate (fashion girl) all-white home aesthetic (without an interior designer)
By Shannon Osztonits -
Ever walk into a space and thought, “WOW?”
With its all-white aesthetics, accented by silver chrome tones, Singaporean celebrity fashion stylist Rong brought to life her stylish bachelorette pad without any interior designer’s mood boards, relying on her own creativity to conceptualise this luminous, trés chic space.
The result is something rather spectacular — especially considering Rong didn’t use an interior designer during her home renovation process. Her taste level and eye for attention to detail shine through.
Even more impressive is the monochromatic white aesthetic, typically hard to achieve. Her home has that minimalist feel she was after, yet it still maintains a bounty of character. Nothing feels saturated. Everything is in balance.
Sourcing and ordering most of her home (furniture and finishes) off online shopping platforms, it takes faith and guts to do so — especially when said platform isn’t a local one. Hello, Taobao.
Rong truly trusted herself during this home renovation process: her instincts, creative side, originality and personal style.
Achieving the ultimate cool girl all-white home aesthetic
Does your vision board also comprise an all-white home aesthetic, and you’re searching for tips on how to achieve this interior design theme?
Or, are you more curious as to how Rong pulled off creating an impressively cool space without going the interior designer route?
Here are 4 tips for creating an all-white home style:
Furniture as Art
“Currently, my favourite space in my home is this chair with a lamp behind it. Every corner I wanted to make feel like an art gallery,” Rong says.
The corner occasional chair is from Taobao, as well as the quirky-shaped floor-length mirror, the white ceramic lamp, the Tom Dixon-esque chrome wall sconce, and the standing reading lamp next to the sofa.
If you had to redo your home, and the furniture selections were left up to you, how would you go about making the decisions?
The white monochrome furniture checklist:
- Choose furniture in an array of white hues and tones, such as ivory, cream, pearl, milk, alabaster, etc.
- Pick an accent highlighter. For example, Rong went with silver chrome accents.
- Balance textures. Buy a few abstract pieces — you can get away with it in an all-white home.
Rong sourced all the furniture herself, choosing pieces that stand out as art. Not just furniture.
Attention to detail
The attention to detail across every space of Rong’s home is hard to ignore. Although the setup is minimalist, each corner and crevice is intentional, from the lighting fixtures to the specific type of mirror or chairs to her choice of switches.
She’s created a great equilibrium throughout her house.
Start training your eye to notice the finer details. Select furniture that is a cut above the rest because of a particular attribute. For example, the curved edge instead of a straight one.
This doesn’t equate to buying the most expensive furniture.
For example, Rong’s bubble-shaped chrome silver tissue box that sits on her dining table; the wavy edges of her floor-to-ceiling mirror (inspired by Italian architect Ettore Sottsass’s 1970 Ultrafragola Mirror); the upside-down conical hat-shaped string pendant lights; or the glitzy, circular wall sconces.
A minimalist theme doesn’t mean boring.
Tip: Visualise the bigger picture and how the small details bring it all together.
Play around with textures and tones
Light white tones bounce off one another, balancing the living room space.
Having fun with accents and physical compositions is an important factor in an all-white home aesthetic. Without varying textures and tones, the space appears dull and flat.
For example, in Rong’s living room, her centrepiece sofa is similar to cotton T-shirt fabric (trending), which sits on a massive tufted cream rug. A masculine, cooler silver metal standing reading lamp sits next to the sofa. In the corner of the room is an occasional chair, draped over with a luxe white cushion. This is balanced by a textured ceramic stone-white lamp behind it.
Rong chose a silver chrome accent, which is used in furnishings and finishes in every room and space.
Rong plays with an array of textures and silver and white tones so well in her home, from her oversized sintered stone island to her silk sheets to her silver chrome doorways.
Creating a space illusion
A dark colour palette can often confine a space. Using lighter shades and tones, especially white, creates the illusion of space.
By pairing white-on-white, Rong has cleverly manipulated her 947 sq ft apartment, where every room appears larger than it is.
This is especially important for walls and ceiling colours. The stylist opted for “Sail White” Odour-less from Nippon Paint.
The open-style kitchen and dining room is one of this home’s most striking features.
The fashion stylist’s apartment could easily slide into the streets of somewhere in New York City; a fashionable abode of the ultimate cool girl.
It’s minimalist, yet creative. Functional, but fashionable. Less luxury; more cool.
