Ikea's Overallt collection: Stunning Africa-inspired pieces to hit stores in May

Ikea, known for their cool Scandi designs, has ventured into the world of modern Africa. They teamed up with Design Indaba to learn more about the contemporary African design scene. Five designers from five African countries -- selected within fashion, sculpture, architecture and furniture design industries -- each teamed up with an in-house Ikea designer to present Ikea's latest collection: Overallt. The Overallt collection will be available in stores and online from May 2019 onwards.

Match your round dining tables with these curved benches (frm $119), made out of solid eucalyptus. It was inspired by the Kenyan evening ritual, when friends often gather (bringing their own chairs) to talk about their day.

Designer Bibi Seck created an outdoor rocking chair and footstool (pictured, $69), made out of metal structure and weaving. It is something that he has been using a lot in his work in Senegal.

“I imagine people sitting in this rocking chair ($119), rocking and reflecting. I imagine my father who is in his eighties sitting in it, smoking his cigar; my sister-in-law with her newborn baby; my niece and nephews playing on it,” he says.

The easy chair ($89) by designer and architect Issa Diabate is made out of untreated plywood. No nails or glue needed!

More cushion covers! These were designed by artist and architect Renee Rossouw, who was inspired by her favourite animal, the African Elephant.

Made out of steel and polypropylene, this basket (from $19.90) by fashion designer and artist Selly Raby Kane was inspired by the ritual of hair braiding. "It’s this shared moment when your head either ends up on a family member’s lap for hours and hours, or you lean back in a chair in a cool salon, listening to the latest Da- kar and foreign pop,” she says.
