Fans are essential in our regular HDB household, as we prioritise having good air circulation over leaving the air conditioner running. The main reason is largely to save on our utility bills, and we have diligently kept the bills below the national average consumption each month. It has become a habit for our family to turn on the fan over the aircon, since we can also avoid having sinuses and drying out our skin from being in an aircon room.

If you have read our other fan round-up articles, you will know how much of a fan we are over Mistral’s stylish and functional fans - especially the Mistral’s Greenleaf series and its wooden designs, ideal for Scandinavian and Japandi interiors.

Mistral Greenleaf Fan: Sustainable and Eco-friendly

Greenleaf by Mistral introduced its first collection of 3 household fans made of eco-friendly and durable materials, with 100% recyclable packaging in April 2023. Each fan is built with a DC motor which is not only energy efficient, but it also boasts low noise levels, on top of its 10-year warranty for reliability.

In addition, Mistral Greenleaf also partnered with NParks’ Garden City Fund to initiate a Plant-a-Tree programme to support SG Green Plan 2030 which focuses on the importance of sustainability and green initiatives in Singapore. Donations will be made to the Plant-a-Tree programme by Garden City Fund, where every $5 will be donated for every Greenleaf by Mistral product sold, and every $3 will be donated to the Greenleaf Fund for every purchase of a Green Mark product.

Mistral Greenleaf II Fans: Prices from $129

This year, Mistral Greenleaf II presents a series of 3 new household fan models ranging from table fans to a wall fan, with the same sustainability and accessibility objectives. The standout feature for last year’s collection has to be the stand fans with a convertible height function that transforms a table fan into a stand fan. The adjustable height function in the fan helps homes with small layouts, as it encourages multiple uses across different rooms, thanks to its easy adaptability.

For the Mistral Greenleaf II Collection, there are 2 different 8” table fan models that retail from $129. The MHV840R-G 8” DC High-Velocity Fan with Remote is equipped with a cool motion sensor feature, and it is also the fan model that we will be reviewing.

The Mistral Greenleaf II 14” wall-mounted fan is available at $129, and it is a great option for space optimisation without wasting any precious floor space. With its grilled fan design, it enhances the safety aspect for homes with a lower ceiling height in particular, as well as for homes with young children. The best part is that the wooden design will not look too obtrusive, as it comes with the same wood aesthetics.

Mistral Greenleaf II Fans: Remote Control

All of the fans in the Mistral Greenleaf Collection are equipped with the convenience that a busy homeowner requires, which includes having remote control access. The remote controller for the Mistral Greenleaf II fan is also magnetised with a designated spot to store it, so there is no more excuse for misplacing it.

With remote control in the picture, we were able to integrate the Mistral Greenleaf II fan into our smart home system, for greater home automation needs and it also relieves our fear of losing the remote control one day. Having the table fan set up in our smart home system simplifies our daily routine, since we can turn our lights and fan on and off with a single voice activation command.

Mistral Greenleaf II Fan: Effective Air Circulation

An oscillating fan offers an even and natural air distribution for better comfort and reduces stagnant air with better air quality. We do not rely on the Mistral Greenleaf’s oscillation function much, as we have our ceiling fan to circulate the air. However, there are “dead” corners, with little or no wind, especially for areas like the lower deck of my toddler’s bunk bed or the middle of a living room. Additionally, those who do not like having the wind in their face, but still want to cool themselves down will enjoy a good oscillation on the fan.

The oscillation on the Mistral Greenleaf covers a wide range, with 90-degree for up-down oscillation and 60-degree for left-right oscillation. Both the up-down and left-right oscillation functions can work simultaneously, which is great for providing effective air circulation with 4-speed settings, especially when the fan is placed in the corner of the room.

Mistral Greenleaf II Fan: Motion Sensing

Motion sensor function in a table fan is one of the more interesting functions, since it can turn the fan on and off automatically, even without the need for any voice command. Both the left-right and up-down sensing ranges are about 90 degrees, with a power-saving sensor distance of about 2 metres.

I thought that the motion sensor function could help with my husband’s bad habit of leaving the table fan on for the whole night unintentionally, especially during those late nights of working overtime. When he tested the motion sensor function, he realised that the Mistral Greenleaf fan would turn off on its own, even when he was seated right in front of it. The motion sensor works just like how the lights in some offices and toilets, where it requires movement, so a stationary human will not be detected.

Having the motion sensor will be the most ideal for those with pet dogs or cats at home, as the Mistral Greenleaf will help the fur animals stay cool when they are in the vicinity, and turn off automatically when no motion is detected. This is more energy-efficient when compared to leaving the fans turned on for the whole day, in hopes of ensuring that your pet dogs and cats do not go into overheating mode. A good placement of the table fan could be by your pets’ food and water bowls, to encourage them to stay cool and hydrated all day in our hot and humid Singapore.

Mistral Greenleaf II Fan: User-friendly Design

Aside from its chic and wooden grain design, the Mistral Greenleaf fan also comes with a thoughtful handle that I found to be extra handy, as it allows me to carry and use the fan conveniently across different rooms.

Regular cleaning and maintenance for fans is important to ensure that the wind speed and performance are at their best. Having previous experiences with desk fans and standing fans, I appreciate how the Mistral Greenleaf fan is designed with easy grille and fan blade removal. Separately, there is also an additional aroma tray at the front of the grille, where a simple turn is all it takes for me to access the aroma pad, and for the fan to double as an aroma diffuser effortlessly.

Mistral Greenleaf II MHV840R-G Fan: Retails at $139

Do you know that the energy used by 1 aircon is equivalent to 11 fans in total? This is just one of the energy-saving tips by NEA, where up to $441 can be saved in a year if you were to switch to a fan instead of using the aircon. The above example was based on the assumption of using a 50W standing fan of up to 8 hours, so the utility bills can be a lot lower if you were to use a lower wattage fan, such as the Mistral Greenleaf II fan at 24W and turn off the fan diligently when it is not in use.

If you have yet to use the $300 climate voucher, the Mistral Greenleaf II fan is a good option to consider, since we are fully convinced of its energy efficiency and all credits to the motion sensor feature. We could easily leave the fan on motion sensor mode for the whole day without having to break a sweat, both physically and financially. It fits into our family’s “fan first” lifestyle, and we are hoping that motion sensors could be made available to more fans in the future.
