You might be wondering why the Editor-in-Chief of Home & Decor is diving into the world of haircare, after all, I’m no beauty influencer right. The answer is simple: just as team Home & Decor is an expert in identifying quality, design, and innovation when it comes to home interiors, we are capable of recognising the same principles in products that elevate daily life as well. Furthermore, when it comes to Dyson, we’re not just talking about any ordinary appliance—this is a brand that seamlessly blends design, technology, and lifestyle, which puts the Nural right at home in our universe. Read on to find out why the Dyson Supersonic Nural stands out as more than just a hair dryer, by embodying the blend of functionality and style that we value in any great home essential.

Dyson’s Entry into Haircare

The evolution of Dyson’s vacuum cleaners over the years, on display at its headquarters at St James Powerhouse in Singapore.

While Dyson may be an established megabrand in the realm of household vacuum cleaners, its foray into the world of grooming was quite recent. Dyson entered the hair appliance market in 2016 with the launch of the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer, instantly revolutionising the industry with its unique V9 digital motor and innovative design that placed the motor in the handle for better balance and reduced arm fatigue. This pioneering move redefined how hair dryers should perform, quickly earning Dyson a reputation for engineering excellence. Following this success, Dyson introduced the Airwrap in 2018, a game-changing multi-styler that utilised the Coanda effect to style hair without extreme heat, offering curling, waving, smoothing, and volumising capabilities—all with just air. In 2020, Dyson expanded its lineup with the Corrale, a cordless hair straightener that featured flexible copper plates, allowing for better styling control with reduced heat damage. These three devices collectively set a new standard in haircare, combining cutting-edge technology with Dyson’s commitment to protecting hair health. Now, with the Dyson Supersonic Nural, the brand continues to push the boundaries of hair styling, integrating intelligent heat control and advanced attachments for a truly customised and gentle hair care experience.

The Science Behind the Nural Technology

The Dyson Supersonic Nural is available in a range of different colourways, adding to its modern look.

The Dyson Supersonic Nural is no ordinary hair dryer. It’s a piece of tech that truly understands hair care. At its core lies the “Nural” technology, which uses a time-of-flight sensor and motion-sensing accelerometer to adapt to your hair-drying needs. Picture this: as you move the dryer closer to your scalp, the temperature drops to a comfortable 55°C, preventing any heat damage. The temperature control is visible through colour changes on the back of the dryer, ranging from cool blue to warm red as it adapts. This intelligent design means your scalp is always protected, and your hair retains its natural shine. It’s as if you have a mini stylist watching over you, ensuring every drying session is a safe one.

What’s in the Box

The Nural comes with a set of five thoughtfully designed attachments that cater to all hair types. My favourite? The Smoothing Nozzle, which helps to tame those frizzy ends and produce a neater look. Aside from that, the set also comes with a dome-shaped diffuser for long natural waves, curls or coiled hair, a Gentle Air attachment for up-close drying (also good for men with short and spiky hair), a Styling Concentrator as well as a Flyaway Smoother. Dyson also embedded magnetic IDs into each attachment, allowing the dryer to recognise which one you’re using and adjust heat and airflow accordingly. It’s small touches like these that elevate the Nural beyond being just a hair dryer.

On Design

No matter your style preference, there will be one version of the Supersonic Nural to match your taste.

No matter your style preference, there will be one version of the Supersonic Nural to match your taste.

The Dyson Supersonic Nural boasts a design that’s as revolutionary as its technology, effectively beating out all other hairdryers on the market. Unlike traditional hair dryers, its motor is cleverly housed in the handle, giving it a sleek, compact profile that’s incredibly easy to manoeuvre. This thoughtful placement not only balances the weight for more comfortable use but also allows for a slimmer, more elegant barrel that fits effortlessly in hand. The transparent back shell offers a fascinating peek into the dryer’s high-tech inner workings, reflecting Dyson’s commitment to blending form with function. Every detail, from the magnetic attachments to the colour-changing heat indicator, speaks to a product designed with both beauty and practicality in mind, making the Nural not just a hair dryer, but a statement piece.

Perhaps a nod to the see-through concept of the bins in a Dyson vacuum, the see-through back shell evokes a futuristic look while helping you to appreciate the level of intricate detail going into the hairdryer.

Performance and User Experience

The Nural is perfect for short hair too, allowing you to get a neat and voluminous look in less time.

Now, let’s talk about the most important part—the drying experience. My short crop hair was completely dry in minutes, and I could feel the difference in how lightweight and airy it felt afterward. The Nural’s airflow, powered by Dyson’s Air Multiplier Technology, is impressive, making every blow-dry session faster and more efficient.

Having undergone too many rounds of chemical straightening and relaxing when I was younger, my naturally wavy hair is now dry and brittle. Dyson Nural helped to tame my frizzy ends without aggravating the condition further. I noticed that my arm also doesn’t ache now since I don’t have to hold the hairdryer at least 30cm away from my head. Similar to the Dyson Supersonic, the Supersonic Nural also comes with a cold shot button. Once you’re done styling, switch to the cold shot function, which blasts waves of comforting cool air through your hair to help set the style.

I also love the Pause Detect feature, which turns off the heat and lreduces the airflow whenever you set the dryer down. It’s like the Nural knows when to take a break, just as you do. The magnetic grip on the attachments is worth a special mention too—it holds on firmly without being a hassle to switch out. The magnetic force is strong, ensuring a secure hold on the attachments. It’s these details that make it clear Dyson isn’t just about technology; it’s about thoughtful design.

Maintaining your Nural

One other thing that I really like about Dyson’s hair dryers (the Supersonic and the Nural) is that they come with a removable filter cover, allowing you clean the filter effectively. This is something not available in other hairdryers, and the main reason why they tend to break down easily. When dirt gets stuck in the filter, it prevents efficient air intake, which causes the hairdryer to overheat. Dyson recommends doing a monthly clean to keep the filter clean.

An Unexpected Test: Grooming Dorje and Dawa

Dogs are especially sensitive to heat and noise, thankfully the Dyson Nural worked wonderfully on Dawa. She didn't flinch from the air current like she used to with other dryers. It also took less time to dry her thick coat.

One of the more surprising tests I did with the Dyson Nural was on my two dogs, Dorje and Dawa. They’re not fans of loud noises or hot air, so grooming them can be a real challenge. But here’s where the Nural really stood out. With its low-noise operation and temperature control, they stayed surprisingly calm throughout the process. The dogs sat still, and I managed to cut down on their weekly grooming time significantly. It’s moments like these that make me appreciate just how versatile the Nural is—it’s not just for hair; it’s a grooming essential for everyone in the family, furry friends included. Investing in the Nural means you’re getting more than a hair dryer; you’re adding a tool that serves multiple purposes and does it all with the same efficiency and care.
