Tip #1: Don't expect too much
We've come to develop a pretty laissez faire attitude when it comes to Carousell. Assume nothing and expect even less -- the deal is not done until the cash actually grazes your hand or bank account. Our semi-brutal suggestion: Tell yourself you're probably not going to sell anything, and if you do, it is a bonus. This helps to keep your expectations in check so you don't feel crushed when your $50 armchair almost sells. Twice.
Tip #2: Be detailed
To prevent multiple questions as well as strenghten your credibility, include as many details and measurements as possible in your listing. Be honest: Talk about the flaws of your three-year-old wooden cabinet, the number of times you have used the teapot, and even the original price you got it for. Also state your conditions: no trades, meet-ups only, 50 per cent deposit upfront, self-collection etc.
#3 Give yourself some wiggle room on price
Set your price higher than what you were willing to let the item go for, but not too high that it will scare potential buyers. You can then offer discounts to potential buyers or slash prices if the item is not selling. You should also search whether there are others selling the same item, so you can offer a competitive price.
Tip #4: Research!
Before getting into a lengthy negotiation with a potential buyer, check their profile and feedback they have received. If they have negative reviews that make you feel uncomfortable, that's a sign to decline dealing with them.
Tip #5: Ask for offers
When the deal is almost through (when negotiations about price and location are done), get the buyer to make a formal offer. This gives you a small measure of protection because once an offer is accepted, both parties can leave feedbacks. It's not a guarantee, but to maintain a clean record most Carousellers only offer when they are serious. If the deal falls through, at least you can leave an angry rant about the irresponsibility of this buyer.
Tip #6: Be safe
For added security, ask buyers to pay you via Caroupay, Carousell's payment feature which allows people to pay directly within the app using DBS Paylah!, credit or debit cards. It's a win-win situation: buyers will be less likely to back out since payment has been made; Caroupay holds onto the funds until buyers have received their items.
