When Gillian Loo was designing her home, she wanted an interior that would showcase the contemporary art that she and her architect husband, Matthew McGrory, had collected over the years.

Apart from displaying their paintings and ceramics, the couple also wanted their home (pictured, below) to be a place where friends could come over for drinks and gatherings. While looking for an outdoor fridge to hold beverages for their rooftop parties, they discovered Liebherr, the German specialist in cooling and freezing appliances.

Keeping it cool

As she wanted her fridge and freezer to complement her home design, Gillian chose from Liebherr’s Monolith collection, a range of premium built-in appliances with modular combinations that allow for customisation.

“Because of the impressive size of the appliances in the Monolith range, my husband decided to make that a feature in our very modern kitchen with its bespoke handmade black cabinets,” Gillian shares. The Monolith’s heavy-duty hinges with soft-close mechanism also enabled stainless steel door panels and handles to be attached, displaying the fridge and freezer in the best way possible, seamlessly integrating them with the rest of the kitchen cabinets.

At 213.4cm x 76.2cm and with a depth of 63.5cm, the couple’s Monolith Refrigerator EKB 9471 is ideal for their needs. “Even though I have a small family, we store everything in the fridge or freezer, from food to medicines and even cosmetics, because of our tropical climate,” Gillian explains. “Liebherr is also one of the few companies that have an under-counter pull-out fridge. This is a lifesaver for milk, drinks, sweets and snacks as it’s probably the appliance in the kitchen that gets opened and closed most often when you have a teenager like we do,” she says.

The Monolith Refrigerator EKB 9471, with its BioFresh technology that ensures optimum temperatures for various items, also helps keep food fresh for longer. “The fact that different compartments have independent climate control is a big positive for me,” says Gillian. In addition to two BioFresh drawers, the third drawer can be set to BioFresh-Plus, which lowers the temperature to -2°C, making it ideal for storing fresh seafood.

The fridge’s FlexSystem (pictured, below) also offers compartment dividers that help separate fruits and vegetables from the rest of the items in the fridge to keep things organised.

The fridge’s InfinityBeam lighting system is something Gillian really appreciates. It illuminates the BioFresh drawers with a bright light from above so that everything in the drawer can be seen at a glance, even when it is closed. In addition, the fridge is equipped with InfinityLight, a seamlessly integrated LED side-wall lighting, which can be adjusted to one’s preference. Set it to emit a soft, brightening effect on opening, and a soothing warm glow at night. And since InfinityLight emits less heat, food quality is preserved as well.

In sunny Singapore, a glass of ice-cold water is always a treat. The Monolith’s InfinitySpring (pictured, below) makes it easy to stay hydrated with a built-in water dispenser that can accommodate various container sizes, including carafes and bottles. The integrated filter also ensures water quality is always top-notch.

To complement her fridge, Gillian also opted for the Monolith Freezer EGN 9471 with its large storage capacity and adjustable freezer door bins that can accommodate smaller items. For quicker cooling, the freezer’s SuperFrost function can be activated before grocery shopping, taking the internal temperature down to -32°C for a set amount of time, to quickly freeze the newly bought items and counteract any temperature transfer from warmer items. This function can also be used in the automatic IceMaker to produce more ice faster, especially useful when guests come over. On its own, the IceMaker produces 1.6kg of filtered ice in just 24 hours, with a storage capacity of 1.8kg.

Built to last

In 1954, Liebherr built its first refrigerator, with series production beginning the next year. Today, the German specialist produces just under 2.3 million fridge-freezers and wine chillers for global distribution each year.

Its precision engineering means every part is carefully designed and tested before each product is assembled. Before a hinge is even approved, it has to pass through at least 100,000 opening cycles – equivalent to 15 years of use.

But in the unlikely event of any material or engineering faults, Liebherr offers a two-year guarantee for its appliances, with all essential parts kept in stock for over a decade. Easy installation, customisation and sleek accessories also mean the appliances will fit nicely into any home design.

For homeowners on the hunt for a good fridge, freezer or wine cabinets, Gillian advises doing your research and bearing in mind that each family has different needs. “Once you are armed with that knowledge, visit the showroom and ask lots of questions,” she suggests.
