From pottery classes to exquisite designs, these ceramicists are your go-tos for all things pottery
Think of pottery and you might recall that signature scene in the 1990 film Ghost where actors Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze were famously seen sculpting wet clay lovingly.
Today, many of us continue to be intrigued by pottery which explains why there are many places in Singapore where we can buy handmade ceramic items and attend pottery classes.
5 Top Ceramic Brands
In case you’re new to the pottery scene, here’s our list of 5 of the top and famous ceramic brands and pottery names in the world of clay.
Mrida Ceramique
Sheemita Vatsyayan, a sculptor and founder of her brand Mrida Ceramique, believes that clay is unique and she calls it her “child.” “I give her the love she needs, the warmth she desires, [and] the ambition she aspires,” she shares on her website.
The result: Beautifully handcrafted ceramic jewellery, sculptures, home decor and more that reflect a side of who Mrida is as a person. Her eye-catching nature-inspired rings, for example, can help to elevate the simplest of outfits, turning them from stylish to stand out.
Gellyvive
Specialising in clay and spatial installations, Genevieve Ang stumbled upon clay when she was 10 years old, and the rest was history.
Her fascination with clay continued into her adulthood, and in 2020, she launched Gellyvive, creating handmade ceramic pieces as well as sculptures that are “of human height.” Currently, the contemporary artist is in the midst of completing a ceramic wall mural that spans across a 10-meter wall. We can’t wait to see her masterpiece!
Omelet Trees Studio
Established in 2016, Omelet Trees Studio is founded by husband and wife Nigel and Sarah. Both graduated in Fine Arts and because of their fascination with eggs (yes, eggs), that’s how their cute brand name was conceptualised.
Today, the brand specialises in ceramic necklaces, cups, bowls and more – all lovingly made in small batches in their home.
Mud Rock Ceramics
Professional ceramicist Michelle Lim and banker-turned-potter Ng Seok Har are the brains behind local ceramic studio, Mud Rock Ceramics. With over 15 years of practice, the duo produce products and sculptures for restaurants, architecture firms, corporate companies and more.
Those who’re keen to try out pottery can also sign up for the pottery classes here, ranging from beginners level to advanced levels. It’s not just the adults who get all the fun. A 5-week Little Mud Rockers course is also available for kids from 6 to 12 years old.
Padme Hum Studio
Prior to setting up her own pottery studio in 2018, Tania Missa was an architect and urban designer, working on townships and slum redevelopment projects worldwide. She decided to pursue her interest in ceramics, undergoing training at NAFA and studying under esteemed Singaporean master potter Lim Kim Hui.
Today, she runs Padme Hum Studio which does “things a little differently to other studios.” Through small classes, participants get to learn pottery skills, and they are encouraged to express themselves freely to do “your art, your way.”
