After using our non-stick cookware set for about 2 years, we noticed there were visible scratches on the bases of all 3 pots and pans. Despite not cooking regularly and careful maintenance, the wear and tear still happened over a shorter-than-expected duration. We were worried about having the harmful non-stick coating particles coming off and mixing with the food we cook and eat.

Our decision to switch to stainless steel cookware solidified, after watching a documentary on the health risks that comes with non-stick cookware. Although we are not big home cooks, we contemplated with investing in the traditional WMF stainless steel pans, but the thought of having to store the bulky cookware stopped us from proceeding with the purchase. Thankfully, WMF recently launched a new 7-Piece WMF Click and Serve Cookware set which is both stackable and multifunctional, ideal for our compact kitchen with limited storage space.

WMF Click & Serve: 7-Piece Cookware Set

In the WMF Click & Serve set, there are a total of 4 pans including the smallest 16cm stainless steel saucepans, a medium-sized 20cm stainless steel saucepan, a 24cm stainless steel saute pan, as well as a 28cm frying pan with non-stick coating. Additionally, 2 glass lids in 20cm and 24cm are also in the set, not forgetting the ergonomic removable handle.

The cookware and accessories arrived nice and safe in one huge box, which we got down to unboxing and it felt like Christmas came early for us. Our first impression of the WMF Click & Serve set was how each cookware feels super solid and hefty, the same superior stainless steel quality cookware that you can expect from the WMF standard. We were pleasantly surprised with how both the glass lids are also stackable too, thanks to the interesting butterfly handle design.

WMF Click & Serve: Sturdy Removable Handle

The WMF Click & Serve removable handle looks different from my old stackable cookware set. Instead of a regular button design to release the handle, the WMF Click & Serve removable handle is also made out of stainless steel and comes with a flap-like release mechanism.

I also noticed that the WMF removable handle looks different with a dual hook on the tip for a better grip to secure the cookware ergonomically. The handle can support up to 10 kg and was designed for an easy one-handed operation. There is a 10-year guarantee on the WMF removable handle against manufacturing defects, and the cost to get it replaced will not come cheap at $59.

WMF Click & Serve: Cromargan® Stainless Steel

Do you know there are different grades of stainless steel cookware, where regular stainless steel is made of 18/8 or 18/0 stainless steel? We did not know that too, but we do know that the Cromargan® is a type of stainless steel developed and trademarked by WMF.

It is made from 18/10 stainless steel, which refers to 18% chromium and 10% nickel. The stainless steel composition in Cromargan® is highly durable and it provides better resistance against scratches, impacts, as well as the acids in food.

WMF Click & Serve: TransTherm® Base

In addition, the WMF Click & Serve cookware set also features the specially engineered TransTherm® universal base, which provides optimal heat distribution and retention to be used across various heat sources including induction, gas, and even in the oven. Aside from offering consistent cooking results, the WMF TransTherm® base is also great for energy-saving performance, since the base retains heat well without the need for high energy consumption.

Not all of the WMF’s cookware comes with a TransTherm® base, with only a selected high-quality cookware range. We are pleased to know that it is included in the Click & Serve set, since it also helps with enabling the cookware to be induction-compatible, along with the other heat sources.

WMF Click & Serve: Beginner’s Cooking Experience

Without doing any research and reading up, I went straight in to try out with the WMF stainless steel cookware by wanting to make some roasted potatoes, as I thought that it was a beginner-friendly dish. I started off with boiling the potatoes first to ensure that they were cooked, before going in with the roasting. It felt like a natural and easy way for me to use the same medium-sized 20cm saucepan that came with the lid for roasting, which was helpful to speed up the boiling process earlier.

As a beginner in cooking, I was using a low 120-degree heat, to avoid having my food burnt. After a few minutes of tossing and turning, I realised that the potatoes are not getting anywhere near the ideal golden brown colour. I was hungry and just wanted to go ahead and cook the rest of the ingredients, so I dropped the idea of roasting it altogether.

WMF Click & Serve: How To Cook with Stainless Steel Pans

The initial failed attempt of roasting potatoes got me googling for tips and tricks to cook properly with a stainless steel pan.

One of the repeated tips that I have read is to have the pan preheated properly, with the classic water sprinkle test. If you think that the pan is sufficiently preheated, the water beads should dance and glide around the pan. I am not a fan of using oil in my food, and prefer using butter for everything else instead. However, the ideal scenario is to use the right amount cooking oil to create a natural non-stick barrier between the food and stainless steel pan.

I also learned that acidic foods like tomatoes and lemon may wear down the stainless steel finish if it is cooked for long durations, despite the fact that it is non-reactive and won’t impart or react with the flavours of the food.

Another tip I learnt is to season the stainless steel cookware, just like how you would with cast iron pots, by creating a natural layer of semi non-stick coating.

After the stainless steel cookware is washed and dried completely, preheat the pan over medium heat for around 2 minutes, and the pan should be hot but not to the point of smoking. Next, you will need to evenly coat and spread the entire surface of the pan with 1-2 teaspoons of the right high-smoke cooking oil, like vegetable oil, sunflower oil, or granola oil. Olive oil and other low-smoke cooking oil should not be used, as it may burn and leave a sticky residue.

Leave the oil in the medium-heated pan to continue smoking lightly for the next 2 minutes, as the oil polymerises and form a thin layer over the stainless steel. Allow the pan to cool down completely and wipe off any excess oil, leaving a slight sheen. The whole seasoning process can be repeated several times if you would like to have a thicker non-stick layer. Warm water with a gentle sponge should be used in order to maintain the seasoning. Re-seasoning of the pan will be required from time to time, especially after using soap or cooking acidic food which strips to seasoning.

WMF Click & Serve: Multifunctional Cookware Set

The steep learning curve with stainless steel cookware aside, what I find best about the WMF Click & Serve 7-piece set is its multifunctionality. I like how the set covers everything you need in everyday cooking, where even a non-stick frying pan is thoughtfully included so that you can still make scrambled eggs with ease. Additionally, having 2 glass lids also offers greater cooking efficiency and possibilities, since it enables you to cook 2 dishes such as both the soup and stew simultaneously.

That is not all, as the WMF cookware is highly compatible and can go from the hob to the oven, and the dining table seamlessly. This would really save a lot of time with transferring and washing up, making it a truly multifunctional cookware set. These days, I will just leave the cookware set on the stove top, since it does not take up much space and it is also convenient to grab a pan to use.
