Always place your electronics on the left, where the Green Dragon is

Singaporeans love Fengshui. Whether it’s a five-room HDB flat, a 3-room condominium, or a multi-million Good Class Bungalow (GCB), Singaporeans love getting their trusted Fengshui masters to chip in on the interior design process. From the living room’s indoor plants, kitchen placement of stoves and sinks, to the bedroom’s headboard and doors, we pour over every minute detail to ensure we are set up for a harmonious family life and success.

Once the Fengshui for your house is done, what’s next? Get Fengshui for your office desk and career success, of course.

It’s no secret that most working adults spend a good majority of their daily lives at the workplace, such as the office or home workspace.

And work stress counts as one of the most common ailments suffered by many urbanites today.

Getting help to ensure a smooth financial and work year ahead is always a good thing, which is why many deskbound office employees are beginning to place emphasis on creating a workstation and office desk that is primed for success – with the help of Chinese metaphysics, Fengshui.

Here are a few pearls of Classical Feng Shui to make your office more conducive, generating good Qi, clear negative energy, and give your career a boost of success.

14 Office Desk Feng Shui Tips for Career Success
Feng Shui Tip 1: All electronics on the left
image

1.  Place your office electronics on your left

A simple Fengshui trick is to attract good luck and positive energy at work, is to place either your handphone or your computer on the left hand side of where you sit at work.

The reason is that the left side belongs to the Green Dragon, who brings you prosperity and harmony at work.

The right side belongs to the White Tiger, which will attract more challenges at work (unless you are in a commanding position or unless you deal with difficult authorities all the time etc).

Feng Shui Tip 2: Place real plants

2.  Plants boost your positive health energy

If your working position (whether at home or in the office) is near or backed into a corner, place a small miniature plant in front of your table to bring positive energy to a stagnant area.

You will be able to work better and this will boost your health and stamina.

Different plants have different meanings but in general, plants represent and symbolise growth. Hence, having them on your office desk means you’re growing at work and progressing well.

What Plants Are Great: Jade plant, silver crown, money plant.

Which Plants to Avoid: Cactus or any plants with thorns or too many flowers (this could be more of a hindrance than a help). Fake plants can attract negative energy or even lower your current mood and self-esteem.

Feng Shui Tip 3: Calming music removes "Sha Qi"

3. Music removes ‘Sha Qi’ or negative energy and tension

To ensure harmony and calm your nerves and soothe your temper, play some music around you

Aim for calming melodies or songs without any lyrics. Try to avoid anything too upbeat or energetic as it may distract you if you’re meant to be concentrating on your work.

However, different people respond to different music. If you find rock ballads to be soothing, go ahead and play them.

If you are running your own business, having soothing music place in the office is good for business and your employees.

Alternatively, getting your clients to meet somewhere with pleasant music can ensure higher chances of discussion or deals.

Feng Shui Tip 4: Don't face sharp corners
image

4.  Avoid facing any sharp corners and edges

“A sharp edge can bring about a problem known as Edge Sha, which can cut through positive energy from being received by the working adult,” says Feng Shui master Joey Yap. “Ensure there are no sharp edges heading in from the outside, angled at a window near your seat or cubicle, particularly if the window is behind you.”

Make sure that your desk or work space isn’t facing any sharp corners or edges such as pillars, other buildings or walls and so on.

These sharp edges can invite in negative energy.

They will cause migraines, headaches, pressure and unhappiness for yourself and others. Keep your desk facing a different way or try to put up a blockade or something between your desk and the sharp edge or corner if you can’t move it.

If it is truly unavoidable and you feel uncomfortable, place a bowl of salt or a salt lamp between you and the sharp corners to minimize pressure and “Sha Qi”.

Feng Shui Tip 5: Crystals on the right

5. Place crystals to your right

Crystals such as Tourmaline or Clear Quartz should be placed at the right-hand corner of your desk.

This helps you to breakdown the stressful energies at work. It can also reduce attacks from ‘tricky’ people or those who may want to con you.

They can also attract benefactors to assist you in your work.

Remember to cleanse the crystals regularly to keep them at their most effective.

Feng Shui Tip 6: No direct exposure to doors

6. Table shouldn’t face corridors & doorways

If your table is facing a doorway, walk path or corridor, make sure you have a mini partition to block the direct energies that may affect you.

Corridors and doorway openings have a form of fast moving energy. There energies may distract you so that you can’t fully concentrate on your work.

Make sure to have a small blockade or wall that ensures you can’t easily see the doorway or corridor in front of you.

If it is your own business or office premise, you can put up curtains as well (simple and effective).

Feng Shui Tip 7: Water in the North
image

7. Place a water feature in the north corner

Water symbolises balance, flowing energy and wealth. Don’t have space for a water fixture in your office?

Get a painting or photo of a large body of water such as a river or a waterfall to symbolise that flow of energy and creativity.

If possible, place a water feature in the north corner of your house or office to activate good career possibilities and opportunities.

Try to avoid stagnant or sitting pools of water.

Instead, consider fountains that have a flowing water system or even a fish tank that has moving currents. This will bring you luck.

Feng Shui Tip 8: Red item in the South

8. Place a red table lamp facing south

Lamps or light fixtures energises your name and improves your reputation too. Light can also be a source of creativity so you’re never dry on inspiration.

Ensure you place a table lamp or something that is red in colour at the south corner of your desk to attract recognition, fame and achievements.

The colour red should be vibrant and uplifting, instead of dull or unclean. This will also boost your luck in getting a promotion.

Just a small item will do, simple, and nice.

Feng Shui Tip 9: Clean desk, clear mind

9. Tidy desk after work every day

Make sure you tidy up your desk every time you finish working — so that the next day is a fresh new start and brings you a smoother start for the day.

Always declutter your desk.

Try to avoid making your desk messy or disorganised in the evening as this can cause stagnant energies to accumulate.

This may also create frictions between you and your co-workers.

A clean desk leads to a clear mind.

Feng Shui Tip 10:

10. Avoid hanging mirrors in the office

Mirrors are said to reflect chi energy throughout the area and encourages introspection.

Avoid hanging mirrors in the office or workspace. Especially avoid hanging it behind your back. This also applies to pictures or anything that strongly reflects, or acts like a mirror.

This can cause you to attract complaints and increase the chance of people looking to backstab you.

If you need to check your makeup or do up your hair, use a small compact mirror that you can carry around in your purse or bag instead.

You Can Hang A Mirror If: Feng shui experts believe that if you’re sitting with your back facing your office door, make it a point to use a mirror to reflect Qi or Chi back into your office and most importantly, to you.

Know your favourable direction

11. Know your favourable direction

A favourable “Facing Direction” is a guide for you to yield optimum energy, and can be obtained using individual Gua numbers. You’ll probably need to visit a Feng Shui master in Singapore to figure this out.

“Facing your favourable Facing Direction will help you maximise your own potential instead of relying on a more general Feng Shui approach,” says Feng Shui master Joey Yap.

Know your annual & monthly stars

12. Know your annual & monthly stars

“The numbers within the boxes of a Flying Stars or Natal chart — a guide that Feng Shui experts use for their customers — are represented by annual and monthly stars. Observing each type will bring about varying effects,” says Feng Shui master Joey Yap.

“These numbers are predetermined, and one would have to choose according to what they wish to achieve.”

Silver boosts mental power

13. Silver boosts mental power

Having bits of silver in your work space can symbolise and attract intellectual earning and mental power. It can also attract vision, clarity and insight. Perhaps a silver tray for your loose jewellery, or to display your knick knacks?

Wood Symbolises Creativity

14. Wood Symbolises Creativity

Wooden items symbolise creativity, strength, growth and brings luck in money. It’s best to put photos of your family members in wooden photo frames to help maintain and establish a good and solid relationship with them.
