Regenerative tourism

Celebrated for its trailblazing ethos of “Good Times, Do Good,” the B-Corp certified resort operates as a global benchmark for regenerative tourism - boasting an incredible 0.5% waste-to-landfill footprint alongside commitments to carbon neutrality and community-driven initiatives.

Started as a Beach Club and Restaurant

The Potato Head journey began in 2010 in Indonesia. What initially started as a buzzing beach club and restaurant concept evolved over the years into a sprawling multidisciplinary oceanfront haven. Hospitality pioneer Ronald Akili envisioned a sanctuary where creativity, art, music, local culture, and deep environmental responsibility could seamlessly intersect.

By expanded increments - including the introduction of bespoke boutique accommodations and cultural spaces- the destination transformed into a full-fledged “Desa” (Indonesian for village). Having earned spots on The World’s 50 Best Hotels list in 2023, 2024, and 2025, its rise to No. 21 in 2026 marks an ongoing commitment to evolving luxury hospitality into a force for positive environmental impact.

Modern Brutalism meets Local Heritage

Desa Potato Head’s spatial identity is a masterclass in modern architectural synergy, crafted by renowned Dutch architectural firm OMA (led by David Gianotten) alongside celebrated Indonesian architect Andra Matin (AM). The two hotel buildings are named OMA, and AM respectively.

The hotel’s red-brick structures embody a striking blend of Tropical Brutalism and modernism, softened by indigenous materials. Its layout intentionally challenges a typical resort’s exclusivity, featuring elevated structures, open-air plazas, and multi-layered concrete facades that frame views of the ocean and lush greenery.

The overarching goal was to break the barrier between guest and community, reimagining hotel grounds as a shared public realm.

Rather than isolating travelers, the architecture serves as an open stage for music, art, and cultural exchange while actively demonstrating sustainable building methodologies.

Thoughtful, minimalist spaces highlight raw textures - exposed concrete, reclaimed wood, hand-pressed red bricks, woven textiles, and recycled plastic furnishings.

Custom-designed, recycled furniture

Custom-designed furniture (developed in partnership with international and local eco-designers) proves that high design and circular design principles are natural companions.

‘Cultural exchange series’ in 2026

2026 marks a transformative chapter for the Desa with the official launch of the Cultural Exchange Series. This year-long collaborative program brings together international and local artists, designers, chefs, musicians, and innovators to exchange ideas and push the boundaries of creative sustainability.

Guests staying at the resort can engage in an array of multidisciplinary programming:

  • Hands-on sessions involving circular design, zero-waste practices, and sculpture installations.
  • Unique collaborations across the resort’s famed dining spots - such as Kaum, Ijen (zero-waste seafood), Dome, and Tanaman - as well as curated sets at their Hi-Fi underground nightclub and beach club.
  • Culturally rooted, plant-based, and gentle Ayurvedic wellness offerings under the resort’s Merasa philosophy.
