Telok Blangah History

The name “Telok Blangah” is of Malay origin, with “telok” meaning “bay” and “blangah” referring to a “clay cooking pot.” The name is believed to describe the shape of the bay behind Keppel Harbour. The area has a rich history that predates modern Singapore.

Telok Blangah was one of Singapore’s earliest settlements. The Malay Annals even record that Sang Nila Utama, the Palembang prince who founded Singapore, first landed on its shores in the 13th century.

During the 19th century, before the arrival of the British, the area was a key stronghold for the Temenggong of Johor, who was the de facto ruler of the Malays in Singapore. The area, then known as “New Harbour,” was also notorious for its pirate activities.

When the British arrived, they developed “New Harbour” into a major port. In 1900, it was officially renamed Keppel Harbour in honour of Admiral Sir Henry Keppel, a British naval officer who had helped to clear the area of pirates in the mid-19th century.

Keppel History

The name “Keppel” came from a British man, Admiral Sir Henry Keppel, who helped suppressed piracy in the Straits of Malacca. His surveys of the local Keppel waters in the 1840s led to the development of the deep-water harbour.

Keppel area was home to the Keppel Harbour docks, which became a vital part of Singapore’s maritime industry. This is the origin of Keppel Corporation, one of Singapore’s leading conglomerates, which had its roots in shipbuilding and marine operations.

Former Keppel Golf Course

The specific site for the upcoming Berlayar Residenes Keppel October 2025 BTO project has a unique history as a well-known golf course.

The land was home to the Keppel Club, one of Singapore’s oldest and most prestigious golf clubs. Founded in 1904 as Keppel Golf Club, it was named after Admiral Sir Henry Keppel. The club started with just a three-hole course in a nutmeg plantation and grew into a full 18-hole course.

In 2014, the government announced its intention not to renew the club’s lease, which expired in 2021. This was part of a long-term urban plan to redevelop the area for public housing. The golf course at its original Bukit Chermin site formally closed its doors on December 31, 2021.

Membership was by transfer (meaning: you buy a membership directly from a current member), and it could cost tens of thousands of dollars. As of 2024, the club’s website listed a transfer fee of $4,905, in addition to a monthly subscription fee. For non-members, the fees varied significantly. In 2024, a visitor playing 18 holes on a weekday would have paid around $164.59, while weekend fees were higher at around $306.29. Singaporean players, however, paid a lower rate of around $90 on weekdays and $166 on weekends.

The Keppel Golf Course did have a two-level driving range that was also open to the public. The cost to use the driving range was based on the number of balls. In 2024, prices started at $3.27 for a bucket of 50 balls on a weekday morning and went up to $10.90 for 100 balls during peak weekend hours.

The club has since relocated to the Sime Course at the Singapore Island Country Club (SICC), and the site has been handed over to the government for the development of the Greater Southern Waterfront (GSW).

Fengshui

From a Fengshui perspective, the upcoming Berlayar Residences BTO site along Telok Blangah Road, located on the former Keppel Club, is a particularly interesting case due to its unique history and geography.

In Fengshui, the history of land is a significant factor. While some sites, like former cemeteries, may be considered inauspicious, a former golf course is often viewed more positively.

Positive Energy

Some Fengshui practitioners see a golf course as a “Bright Hall,” (明堂) or a large, open space in front of a property that allows positive energy (Qi) to gather and accumulate. The former fairways of Keppel Club can be considered to have provided this beneficial characteristic, which can contribute to wealth and prosperity.

Unlike a cemetery, a golf course is a place of recreation and activity. This is seen as a source of yang energy, which is dynamic and positive. The BTO development on this land could be seen as inheriting this active and healthy energy.

Accumulate Wealth

The site’s location near Keppel Harbour, which connects to the sea, is a highly auspicious feature. Water is a powerful symbol of wealth and prosperity in Fengshui. The expansive water body is believed to help accumulate and contain wealth, making the area favourable for financial success.

Good Fortune

The BTO site is also next to the Southern Ridges and mangrove boardwalk, Berlayer Creek. The Southern Ridges are considered a “dragon vein,” a major energy line in the landscape. Living near such a feature is believed to bring good fortune and stability. The lush greenery and natural surroundings also provide a harmonious balance of energies.

So, the overall macro-Fengshui of the former Keppel Club site is generally considered to be favourable. The combination of its past as a green, active space and its current proximity to major water features and green corridors is believed to attract good fortune and prosperity for its future residents.
