Growing up as an Eastie, Changi chalets and smoky barbecues were the backdrop to almost every milestone of my youth, from lively birthday celebrations to end-of-year class parties. Now that I’m a parent of a 4-year-old son, I’ve been eager to recreate those fond, nostalgic memories for my family.

The arrival of the new Coliwoo Resort Changi gave us the perfect excuse to pack our bags and see how the classic chalet experience has evolved.

Old-School Changi Charm Meets Space-Smart Living

If the grounds of Coliwoo Resort Changi feel familiar, that’s because they carry four decades of local history. The site, located along Jalan Loyang Besar, originally housed a 180-unit chalet villas. By partitioning most of those spacious old chalet layouts into two separate rooms, the resort effectively more than doubled its capacity to 380 units.

Eco-Friendly Upgrades & Heritage Upcycling

Beyond preserving iconic original elements like terracotta clay roof tiles, the resort is also fitted with eco-friendly features. High-capacity 620W solar panels line the roof to power daily operations, from room air-conditioning and water heating to overall energy-efficient lighting, storing any excess energy in a battery system to cut grid reliance.

The green effort extends into every corner, from EV charging to a rainwater harvesting system that waters the resort’s lush plants and greenery. Even the original vintage timber screens were upcycled into custom tabletops, benches, planter boxes, and feature walls.

The nostalgic walkway and structures were retained from the old chalet, elevated with additional signage and security cameras.

Checking In: Our 3D2N Family Stay in the Maisonette

To see how the duplex concept functions for our family of three (two adults and our toddler), we checked into a 400-square-foot Maisonette for a 3-day, 2-night stay from $280. The layout splits functions cleanly: downstairs houses a dining area, kitchenette, and bathroom, while the sleeping area and wardrobe storage are located upstairs.

For a family traveling with a little one, having that physical separation was an absolute game-changer. Once our toddler was asleep upstairs, we could comfortably unwind on the first floor without tiptoeing around in the dark.

Ground-Floor Practicalities

That said, living in a duplex during a short stay comes with a few trade-offs. While the downstairs TV is a nice touch, there’s no traditional sofa setup, and it’s the same for every other room types at Coliwoo Resort Changi; instead, a plush bean bag sits in its place. We also found first-floor storage lacking overall, which quickly became noticeable with a toddler in tow. Because the bathroom is located on the ground floor, daily clothes and wet swimwear from the pool quickly piled up downstairs with nowhere proper to hang them.

Between wet clothes, toys scattered about, and luggage we didn’t want to lug upstairs to the second floor for a short stay, the living space got cluttered fast. While the upper-floor wardrobes will be a perk for long-term residents, having extra hooks or dedicated ground-floor storage would make short family staycations much tidier.

The sleeping arrangement in a Maisonette room was a little tight, with 2 of the wardrobe setup next to the stairwell.

Upstairs Sleeping Arrangement

Upstairs, we slept in a unique layout consisting of three super-single beds. The arrangement was unlike anything we had experienced before. One bed faced toward the top of the stairway, which felt a bit awkward (and definitely wouldn’t pass social media influencer Cliff Tan’s Feng Shui approval!). While one wardrobe acts as a divider, squeezed between two of the beds for personal privacy, the other two wardrobes are positioned at the opposite corner right by the staircase landing.

On the practical side, each bed is thoughtfully fitted with underbed luggage storage, a dedicated reading light, and a charging point, though having a small shelf for nightstand essentials like earplugs and phones would have been a great addition. In hindsight, if you’re checking in as a family, it’s worth requesting a different bed arrangement to better suit your preferences.

Exploring the Other Room Options

While the Maisonette worked well for our split-level living needs, Coliwoo Resort Changi offers seven distinct room categories across its 380 units, from 200 sq ft to 400 sq ft, to suit different travel styles and group sizes.

  • Maisonette (400 sq ft): The signature 2-storey duplex layout designed for separate living and sleeping zones for a maximum of 3 adults.
  • Eastin Studio (280 sq ft): Single-level living for families or groups of friends, accommodating up to 3 adults.
  • Pool View Queen Studio (280 sq ft): A mobility-friendly unit with a larger bathroom and pool views, fits 2 adults.
  • Premier Studio (240 sq ft): A mid-sized single-level setup for couples or friends, up to 2 adults.
  • Deluxe Studio (220 sq ft): Efficient, compact studio living for 2 adults.
  • Patio Studio (220 sq ft): Features direct outdoor ground-floor patio space, accommodates 2 adults.
  • Superior Studio (200 sq ft): The most compact option for 2, ideal for minimalist or long-term solo residents.

Single-Storey Alternatives

For seniors with mobility needs, the Poolview Queen Studio, which fits two adults, is well worth considering as an alternative to the Maisonette. Beyond offering direct, scenic views of the pool, its single-level layout eliminates staircase concerns.

A major perk of the Poolview Queen Studio is its bathroom design. It’s significantly larger than the Maisonette’s, fully wheelchair-accessible, and tucked toward the back of the studio rather than right by the front entryway. This layout gives you a much wider foyer and more breathing room right as you walk in, making it easier to manage wheelchair and luggage without feeling squeezed.

Coliwoo Resort Changi Amenities

Of all the updated facilities, the swimming pool was our absolute favourite. Coliwoo replaced the site’s old, traditional lap pool with a modern curved-shaped layout that feels much more like a tropical retreat. Right alongside it is a mini children’s pool, and the surrounding deck offers plenty of nicely shaded spots to lounge out of the direct sun. To make the most of it, we brought along an inflatable swan float, elevating our pool session into an unforgettable family afternoon filled with laughter.

The main reception area serves a dual purpose as a welcoming lobby and a functional co-working social lounge. It’s equipped with an on-site coffee machine for daily morning brews and a dedicated mini toddler play corner, a thoughtful touch that buys parents a few quiet minutes while settling in or catching up on work.

For recreation, the resort offers a fully equipped 24-hour gym and an outdoor climbing area for kids, in addition to the social activity calendar. If you enjoy singing, there’s also a private karaoke room available to book for $20/hour. Far from a cramped booth, it’s generously sized, comparable to a commercial VIP KTV room, and comfortably accommodates up to a maximum of five guests per room (allowed until 10.30pm only), as per Coliwoo’s visitor policy, for an intimate jam session.

Indoor Kitchenette Replaces Outdoor BBQ

One notable shift from the traditional Changi chalet experience is the absence of on-site barbecue pits. Because Coliwoo Resort Changi caters to long-term co-living residents alongside staycationers, charcoal smoke and late-night grill noise were phased out to keep the grounds quiet and comfortable for peaceful nights.

If you’re still craving that classic outdoor barbecue experience, Pasir Ris Park is just a short stroll away, where public BBQ pits can be rented for an affordable $20 per day. Alternatively, you can easily whip up a feast inside the comfort of your air-conditioned room too. The in-room kitchenette is fully stocked with essential cookware, spatulas, and chopping boards, but the absolute best feature had to be the dedicated purified water tap, which saves us a lot of time and hassle.

Neighbourhood Vibe & Long-Term Living Value

What makes Coliwoo Resort Changi stand out is its low-rise, tranquil environment surrounded mostly by landed homes and lush greenery. Having Pasir Ris Park and the coast right on your doorstep offers an unhurried, resort-style escape, while Downtown East is located within a convenient 10-minute walking distance. We ended up settling every one of our meals there throughout the stay, with the bonus of a free shuttle bus service connecting Downtown East straight to Pasir Ris MRT.

Beyond families undergoing home renovations or HDB Home Improvement Programme (HIP) works, Coliwoo is a great launching pad for young adults. For groups of colleagues or close friends eager to test the waters of moving out of their family homes, it offers an accessible taste of independent co-living.

With monthly rates starting from $3,000 (Guests can book and stay by 31 October 2026 to enjoy $500 off their monthly rental, as part of Coliwoo’s ongoing opening promo), all-inclusive of utilities and Wi-Fi, splitting the rent among housemates makes starting a life together both affordable and straightforward.

Comparing Staycation Options

When weighing your staycation options along Jalan Loyang Besar, your choice ultimately comes down to what you prioritise for your family getaway. Coliwoo Resort Changi is perfect for a quiet, low-density getaway focused on cooking together in your private kitchenette, lounging by the modern curved pool, and enjoying peaceful coastal nature away from the crowds, with rooms starting from $190 per night.

Alternatively, a room at D’Resort @ Downtown East starts from $165, and it is ideal for families with children prioritising hassle-free convenience, as its fully sheltered walkway leading straight into Downtown East provides integrated access to dining, shopping, and entertainment options alongside included 2 Wild Wild Wet passes for a fun-filled waterpark staycation.

Finally, CSC Loyang remains the go-to destination down the beach for those who want the traditional, full-suite Changi chalet experience with rooms from $190, offering expansive, multi-bedroom bungalows and terraces complete with dedicated BBQ pits for a full charcoal feast under one roof.
