History of Tan Boon Liat Building
Once a bustling hub of Singapore’s industrial past, Tan Boon Liat Building has reinvented itself as a haven for furniture enthusiasts. This iconic 15-story structure, located along the Singapore River, boasts a unique bracket-like design that sets it apart from the city’s modern skyline.
Originally owned by Tan Boon Liat & Co. Ltd., the building’s history dates back to the early 20th century. After a devastating fire in 1961, it was rebuilt as an industrial building in 1976. Over the years, it has housed a variety of businesses, including a computer education centre and offices associated with renowned Hong Kong actor Chow Yun Fatt.
Today, Tan Boon Liat Building is synonymous with furniture shopping. Its diverse range of stores caters to all tastes, from contemporary designs to vintage treasures.

If you adore a mid-century modern design, J. Edition’s new flagship store at Tan Boon Liat is a must-visit. This home-grown furniture haven, operated by a husband-wife duo, showcases a curated mix of eclectic and traditional pieces, tastefully blending warm muted tones with vibrant pops of colour together.
If you value both comfort and functionality, their Fabric Gaia Bed (from $1,650) and Noah 3-Seater Sofa (from $2,780) stand out the most among their featured products.
The Fabric Gaia Bed is a plush, oversized bed upholstered in luxuriously soft Plume fabric and curved edges — perfectly embodying the essence of “sleeping on a cloud”.
J. Edition Fabric Gaia Bed
In contrast, the Noah 3-Seater Sofa is a sleek, minimal sofa piece great for maximising space. Its adjustable armrests can be configured to sit an extra person or act as a convenient side table.
Beyond their exquisite furniture, J. Edition also provides exceptional services to help you transform your home. These include free delivery for orders over $500, up to 3 months of complimentary furniture storage, and up to 5 years of warranty ensuring both convenience and peace of mind.

Grey & Sanders
Whether you’re drawn to natural wood elements or love a good mid-century modern maximalist moment, the handcrafted furniture at Grey & Sanders offers versatile pieces that can fit any style. In particular, we appreciate how their furniture designs accommodate the space constraints of smaller HDBs and condos in Singapore rather well.
Take their 2/2.5/3 Seater Sofa and Storage Bed collections for example.
Grey & Sanders CAIRO Sofa
Ideal for individuals and couples, their CAIRO Sofa series (from $1,299) is designed with a high backrest and adjustable headrests, outlined by gentle curves and soft piping details. Its slim profile comfortably seats 2 to 3 people and is available in 2- and 3-seater variants.
Grey & Sanders LISBON Platform Storage Bed
Their LISBON Platform Storage Bed series (from $1,699) strikes the perfect balance between function and form. It keeps clutter out of sight by maximising three pull-out drawers for storage space while its form retains clean, minimalist lines. Its Queen Size version, measuring 196cm in length, is simultaneously spacious yet compact enough to fit into petite BTO HDB bedrooms. Moreover, the headboard is removable and its fabric upholstery is customisable, along with the option of upgrading to a King Size.
Besides their impeccable craftsmanship, their commitment to conscious living is also reflected in their sustainably sourced wood slabs. They offer over 45 unique variants of live edge wood slabs like American Black Walnut, Japanese Beech, African Leadwood, and so on. If you’ve always dreamed of a natural wood dining table as your home’s focal point, their artisans can help bring your vision to life.
This also shouldn’t come as a surprise, but they provide various unique carpentry services from $50 like staining, cutting, and refinishing. For the full list, refer here.
Grey & Sanders is located at 315 Outram Road, Tan Boon Liat Building, #06-02, Singapore 169074. Opening hours: 12pm to 9pm daily. Contact: +65 8371 8864.
Scanteak
Connoisseurs of Scandinavian interior styles will love the furniture collections at Scanteak. As certified veterans in the business, they specialise in wooden and teak furniture that emits low levels of formaldehyde for a safer home.
Beyond their sustainability efforts, their extensive collection is a testament to teakwood’s versatility. From sofas and daybeds to even entrance furniture, who knew that teakwood could be transformed into so many stylish and functional designs?
Scanteak Nest Table Set
We particularly admire how they #supportlocal, as exemplified in their Nest Collection, created in collaboration with the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). Standout pieces include the Nest Table Set ($799), which features a mini table to accommodate your little one.
Scanteak Enkel Nesting Table
Another highlight is their Enkel Nesting Table ($499), which is the ultimate coffee table — because why have one nesting table when you can have three?
Overall, these designs are innovative solutions addressing the growing issue of shrinking home spaces in Singapore.
Scanteak is located at 315 Outram Road, Tan Boon Liat Building, #10-02, Singapore 169074. Opening hours: 10am to 7pm daily. Contact: +65 6990 2294.

Vitra Amoebe Highback Lounge Chair

Admittedly, while their furniture adds a nice avant-garde touch to your home’s interior, their collections do err on the pricier side. At such price points, these pieces could be considered investment pieces, and potentially even be heirloom-worthy in the future!

It was a collaboration with, and shared a space with Angie's Oyster Bar & Grill on the two-floor outpost building within the Tan Boon Liat compound.
Some of the highlight dishes included the coffee, of course, and fresh bakes in the likes of croissants, cinnamon rolls, pain au chocolat, and cakes.
