5 Things to know when choosing bed linen

1/5

1) Stop fussing about the thread count!

There are many ways of arriving at the thread count figure and this can be confusing. At the same time, there are other factors resulting in a good set of linens, such as quality of yarn used and pre/post weaving processes. So do not play the numbers game when it comes to your linens.

2) Choose your material based on your sleeping environment.

If you like blasting the aircon at night, you can opt for heavier cottons and even polyester sheets. If you prefer natural ventilation, choose lighter cottons or natural regenerated fibres, such as tencel or bamboo as these can keep you cooler at night.

3) Feel the bed linen in person to gauge its quality.

Nothing matters more than the feel of the sheets on your skin. Feel not only its smoothness, but the thickness of the sheets as it is an indication of durability. This is especially so for natural regerated fibres as these, while more cooling, are also more fragile than cotton and need to be thickly woven.

4) Line dry your sheets.

When you invest in quality bed linen, it makes sense to take good care of them too. Line dry your sheets to ensure they last. Tumble drying increases the chances of snagging and shrinking.

5) Choose your colours wisely.

The bed is one of the larger pieces of furniture in the bedroom, so how you dress it up greatly impacts the look and feel of the space. Choose lighter colours if you like an airier look and darker colours if you are aiming for a cosier and more intimate feel.
