A baby is coming and your days are about to get busy. Preparation is key, so let's start with the nursery, and how to choose furniture that is safe and practical for your bundle of joy!
Before we dive into the best kids furniture shops in Singapore, here are some expert tips on choosing the best furniture for your children and baby's nursery.
Buying Kids Furniture: 4 Tips from experts
Your baby won't be a baby forever. Think about getting a cot that can be converted into a toddler bed or even a single bed or sofa, says Sharon Wong, founder and CEO of nursery retailer Motherswork.
Buy furniture that can grow with your child
That helps you stretch your dollar in the long run, and you won’t have to overhaul the room every so often.
Do not accept hand-me-down cots & mattresses
There’s nothing wrong with accepting hand-me-down changing tables, wardrobes and baby clothes from friends or relatives.
But when it comes to mattresses, always buy a new one because its more hygienic, advises Denise Ang, general manager of Dynamic Resources, which distributes Babysafe mattresses,
You don’t know how the previous owner cared for it or if it was stored properly,” she explains. “Mould, fungi, and bacteria can thrive on the surface from perspiration and others.”
Choose bedsheets in soft, natural fibres such as 100 per cent cotton, and a waterproof mattress protector.
Get sufficient storage for your child's belongings
There will be clutter, so keep the room organised with adequate storage. Pick a changing table with drawers to keep his clothes, towels and fiapers, suggests Sharon.
It's more convenient than storing them in a wardrobe as everything is within reach.
Storage baskets or toy chests are great ways to decorate the room – choose hues that match the room's colour scheme.
Steer clear of over-stimulating wall paint colours
Children are indeed attracted to bold colours, but painting all the walls in citrus, for instance, may cause overstimulation.
"Yellow is the brightest hue in the spectrum and excessive exposure to it may cause fatigue," shares Kitty Tan, marketing manager of Nippon Paint Singapore.
Instead, add only dashes of yellow to white walls – a refreshingly calm yet stylish combination. Other contemporary hues to try are grey or sand, suggests Sharon from Motherswork. They are gender-neutral and can go with a variety of other colours, too.

Kidz Haven
Founded in 2011 by siblings Vivien and Jeremy Teo who found themselves lost when they had to source furniture for their own children.
The story goes as usual - they couldn't find what they wanted, had to organise group buys to ship their desired kids furniture into Singapore, and eventually started their own business to plug this gap in the market.
Prices range from $269 for a baby mattress, to $449 for a toddler bed, and $769 for a modular floor bed with roof.
Kidz Haven is located at 25 Playfair Road, Singapore 367990.
Ni-Night (Closed)
Founded by a mother of three named Majella, Ni-Night was a children's bedroom furniture shop that was popular for their solid wood convertible and adjustable kids furniture.
We love the Bella Bianca wrought iron bed ($700), which comes in classic white, pale pink or powder blue. And you can rest assure with regard to safety as Ni-Night's furniture pieces are designed by a mother with three children, and made to fit international safety standards, using solid hardwood in Vietnam.
Ni Night was located at 7 Joo Chiat Place.
Mobel Story (Closed)
A great children's furniture haunt that unfortunately has shuttered is Mobel Story (used to be at United Square B1 and Loewen Road, Dempsey).
One of the kid furniture brands that Mobel Story used to carry was Flexa. Safety is covered in Flexa's design process — the classic semi-high bed with a single classic bed and a slanting ladder railing ($2,944) is made from solid pine, and the Play three-in-one storage bench ($550) has a small gap, so little fingers don't get caught in the drawer.
Mobel Story is located in United Square, 101 Thomson Road, #B1-56.
