4 Things to look out for when buying a ceiling fan
1. Room size and Fan size
The size of the fan should be proportionate to the size of the room, so that the fan can keep the room cool without looking out of place.
- Small rooms (<100 sq ft): 29 to 36 inches fan.
- Medium rooms (100–200 sq ft): 36 to 42 inches fan.
- Large rooms (200–400 sq ft): 44 to 54 inches fan.
- Very large rooms or outdoor areas: at least 56 inches or consider multiple fans.
2. Ceiling Height
Besides checking the room size, you should also check the ceiling height.
- Standard ceiling (8 feet): Choose a flush mount or low-profile (hugger) fan.
- High ceiling (>9 feet): Use a downrod to bring the fan to the optimal height.
- Sloped ceiling: Make sure the fan is compatible with angled mounts.
3. Fan Blades
Take note of the angle of the blades which should be around 12 to 15 degrees for ideal airflow. The number of blades matter as well. Usually the more blades a fan has, the quieter it will be but with less airflow.
4. Airflow
The fan’s airflow is usually measured in cubic feet or cubic metres per minute. The higher the value, the more air the fan moves.
