The Tefal Air Force 360 ($599) does a decent job on hard floors and low-pile carpets; it managed to suck up a lot of hair, dirt and unseen dust from the latter, but tends to get trapped on deeper-pile rugs. Boost mode worked well on large particles and debris like cereal, and we like that it is able to run quite a long and continuous time on Boost mode. There are four other nozzles for spot cleaning — a crevice tools for nooks and crannies, a sofa brush for getting hair and dust off fabric upholstery and two brush heads that can be integrated into the rod (so you don't have to keep taking them off) for tabletops or ceilings. The main roller head’s built-in LED light strip helps boost visibility in darker areas. For its price, the Tefal air Force 360 is very handy for daily cleaning of hard floors and tabletop or upholstery messes, and easy to maintain with many removable features.

The Bosch Cordless Handstick vacuum cleaner ($499) won the Best Food & Home category in SWW'S Domestic Diva 2017 awards. It features a motorised PowerBrush and air guide system, taking only a few sweeps to leave an area clean, and an innovative flexible nozzle joint that reaches tight spaces easily. They also found that the Li-Ion batteries provide reliable, long-lasting power after four hours of charging.

The Bosch Unlimited Cordless Vacuum Cleaner ($1,399) is so silent, we could even use it at night! The regular speed setting is powerful enough for functioning most surfaces and could easily pick up both fine dusts and bigger haired dirt particles with just a onceover. We only switched to Turbo mode to vacuum up stubborn dust and cobwebs high up on the walls and ceilings, or deep clean a high-pile rug. The attachments are easy to snap together and slide off, and to start vacuuming there’s an easy trigger button at the handle that you just press once. The bin container is simple to detach from the main unit, although you have to manually remove the filter before pouring the contents into the bin.

The Hizero Bionic 4-in-1 Floor Cleaner ($799) can run up to 80 minutes on the lower setting. While it is only suitable for cleaning hard floor, its versatility stems from four integrated cleaning functions — sweeping, mopping, drying and self cleaning. This means its one cleaning head cleans up both dry and wet messes such as spilled cereal and chunky soup at once, while simultaneously drying the floor and cleaning itself internally as you go. The roller head sweeps up solids and absorbs liquids, cleverly separating them into a dry waste tray and waste water tank. While it’s easy to operate, and has an elegant display interface, it is quite heavy at 3.9kg. However, the wheels and ergonomic handle makes it easy to hold and manoeuvre.

The Dyson V8 offers a lot of tools for the cleaning aficionado. I tested the Fluffy Pro, but Dyson recommends the Absolute Plus, which comes with a direct-drive cleaner head, for people with deep carpets or pets. The soft roller cleaner head is likely the one you’ll use most of the time, and it’s highly maneuverable. It can rotate parallel to the ground (but the canister gets in the way), and smoothly to the sides. There’s even a mini motorised tool you can clean beds with. The V8 takes 5.5 hours to fully recharge, and is clever enough to stop charging once it’s done. For a complete sweep of my 1,400 sqf flat, I averaged a cleaning time of 20 to 25 minutes, which is under the Dyson’s maximum run time (just vacuuming, no dusting).

The Dyson V10 is a meticulously designed performance machine, built to vacuum, dust, and even filter. It performs like a champ, and I can’t find anything crummy to say about it. The new V10 digital motor that is smaller but more powerful. It has a longer battery life, and different acoustics. The V10 also has a fresh design, which aligns the motor, bin, and cyclone in a straight line. This apparently creates 20% more suction power than the V8 and also makes it look like a ray gun. How long you’ll actually get, however, depends on which attachment you use, the power mode you use, and how trigger happy you are. The mini motorized tool, for example, uses the battery, while the combination tool doesn’t. And because you hold the trigger to vacuum, you might get ‘more’ cleaning time than someone else, because you pressed less.

The Gtech Air Ram K9 ($656) impressed me with its nimbleness and powerful suction; it’s easy to work around furniture legs and it lifts dusts and debris (from hair to bits of my cat litter) well — on tile, rugs and rubber mats and during both forward and backward strokes. The LED light highlighted to me fine dusts and cat hair from my grey tabby, which I would have missed under normal lighting. Unfortunately, as the rotating brush, filter, dirt bin and battery are fitted in one area, this all-in-one body a tad too bulky to pick up dirt in corners. However, a quick sweep solves this. I do enjoy that the machine can stand upright, it comes with two chargeable batteries, and scented tabs that make cleaning enjoyable.

The Gtech Power Floor K9 ($740) was designed to tackle coarse, stubborn pet hair besides the usual dust and debris, and it does so quickly and effortlessly even with just one power setting. Suction power diminishes slightly if a lot of hair gets caught in the roller head and it does get quite loud, but we like that it is suitable for all floor surfaces. The short crevice tool is conveniently stored in the handle unit which saves a bit of time when you are going from room to room and is great for reaching nooks and crannies. The K9 also comes with refillable scented cartridges you pop into the filter that actually produce a pleasant scent as you clean! Overall, the Power Floor K9 is a very versatile and user-friendly unit that’s not just excellent for cleaning up after your furry friends, but great for your whole house as well.

The Roidmi F8 Storm (US$289-US$319) is supposed to get up to 55 minutes on a single charge. I vacuum my place on the "standard" gear (130W) and get about 25 to 30 minutes before it dies. The 180W maximum power mode will last 10 minutes. Roidmi tells me it’s on the lowest 80W power mode that you can get up to 55 minutes, but to get to the lowest setting you’ll need to use the Roidmi app. The F8 Storm comes with a one-year warranty, but right now, Roidmi has no customer service centers in Singapore. Roidmi says F8 Storm owners can contact customer service through email (overseas at roidmi.com). And they don’t rule out having Singapore distributors in the future, who can help take care of the machines.

The Philips Powerpro Aqua Stick ($499) is a cordless vacuum and a mop! The mop can immediately clean the area you’ve vacuumed, and can also be detached if you only want to vacuum. Each one-hour charge lasts 40min which was more than enough time to clean a three-bedroom apartment. I like how silent yet powerful the machine is. At the Regular setting, clumps of my dog’s fur, dust and even cereal were picked up quickly. I found the Max setting quieter than other regular vacuum cleaners. My home was squeaky clean after I used the vacuum and mop function.

The Philips latest SpeedPro Max ($699) vacuum cleaner has been designed to capture more dust and dirt faster with its 360-degree suction nozzle. It promises to deliver a powerful performance even when lying flat on the floor, and features an LED nozzle. On the lowest setting (or eco mode), it does a good job of picking up both dust and hair on hard floors and is sufficient for a bit of light cleaning, while normal mode is great for day-to-day cleaning with better pick-up. Turbo mode works best for more efficiently whisking away cobwebs and dust high-up on the ceiling, sucking up the layer of dust on ceiling fan blades or eep-cleaning carpets and deep-pile rugs.
